Ok ive not been swimming since i was little(about 10) and im in my twenties now.
Just wondering if i jumped into a pool would i still be able to do it, just like you can ride a push bike after years? or will i be like "oh shit i cant swim"

Dont bother with "jump in and see", i wont laugh

If your really not sure then go to your local pool and have a talk to them about getting some lessons. There are plenty of people who cannot swim or are not confident in the water so no-one at the centre will take the piss out of you.

Failing that get in the shallow end and give it a try. If you were a reasonable swimmer back then then you should be OK, just be prepared for it to be a lot more tiring than you remember..

I hadnt been swimming for over 10 years,
We were at V98 at Leeds, on the Sunday a few of us wanted to take a dump in a civilised fashion and maybe get a shower, so the Swimming baths at Oulton it was, Barged in, had a well waited for dump then legged it to the pool, mid jump I thought
"Hmmmmmm, how the fuck do i swim again"
I kinda flapped my arms n legs, floated, survived, pee'd in the pool then fucked off back to the Festival

I have just started swimming again, something I had not done for a long time apart from on holiday, never even thought can I still do this just got in the pool and swam LOL It's swimming in the sea I panic about.

I also been horse-riding tonight something I have not done in over 10 years, got on the horse with no probs, when out on the hack the horse bucked twice and had a spooky moment and I managed to stay on

I think some things you just dont forget how to do if that makes sense ?

Everybody wants to go big on this forum, why not start in the shallow end and work your way up

Anyway if there's any fit (female) life guards i'd probably pretend to drown anyhow

I think you'll be ok to be honest... once you get in, your natural instinct will kick in, and your swimming stuff you learnt when you were a kid will automatically come flooding back!

I'm a duty manager at a pool and we have loads of adults in the same situation as yourself.

Just go along to the local pool and get in the shallow end & have a go. But tell the attendant on poolside what the story is first. If you can swim great, if you feel you need help, just ask.

Most pools do adult swimming lessons these days. And its not just for complete beginers. Even if you just want to improve your stroke they will show you where your going wrong.

Not scared in the slightest mate, just simply wanted to spark a discussion from people who went swimming that hadnt been for ages.

Probably give it a go

I've been sitting down for the last 20 minutes - Is it safe for me to just stand up and walk? Should i try to crawl first?

On a serious note, you'll be able to swim fine

It depends if you have spent the last 20 mins downing Stella? In which case, i'd advise a gentle crawl first! LOL

This is a serious question, swimming is mainly about confidence. I have been teaching someone close to me to swim, which he can do until he remembers that he thinks he cant swim and then begins to sink!!! Its the same with children.

The best thing, he ever did was play water polo is semi deep water as he forgot about swimming and the killer instinct took over. I sat back and watched as he was swimming, ducking his head under the water and not worrying if someone grabbed hold of his legs.

Go to a swimming pool with someone else who can give you the confidence to get on with it.

Good luck x

You don't forget how to swim, it'll just be hard work 'til you get back into it. I went a few years back after a break of 10+ years and swam no bother. I only managed a couple of lengths and I was well and truely buggered. I haven't been back since.
