you should of been into rs's in the late 80's and all through the 90's before the internet ruined things, i used to get up early doors for the automart(now autotrader) and the motoring news (now motorsport news) and buy the cheep Rs's and parts. i could find anything for a old escort rs2000 or a 3dr or sapphire in the back of the motoring news, there used to be couple of pages of cars for sale and maybe 5 pages of breakers and salvage all to do with rallying old fords and the latest cosworth stuff.
nobody complained then about nice mk1's and mk2's getting split up,it happened and look at them today. same thing will happen again with cosworths i tell yer

but lets face it owning a cossie aint a sensible decision its about having something different and enjoying it,how many of you out there dont do work on it yourself? not many i bet,if you didnt you`d wonder why you bought a 20yr old ford,i got my 3dr cos i wanted one since i was 16,& that was 23yrs ago, sure i`ve driven better cheap cars(& more expensive) but they dont do it for me.my wife hates it but that only makes it better.
how many times have you said that you have a cosworth after being asked what car you own and got more questions about it than the the guy that says he has an m3 (not saying they are bad tho)
too much emphasis on money on car ownership in my mind, tho hardly surprising in todays climate

I've had a few BMs ( no M-ones though I have driven a few ) and I have a 328i to keep the miles/salt off my Sapphire..................but if I had to sella car it would be the BMW that would go. Just doesn't bring a smile to my face like the Sapphire.....I guess it helps that mine doesn't break down like some of the ones on here seem to

get the smg remapped it makes the car come alive and the csl above would cost around 35k to the same standard , now a true 500 bhp cossie built to right standard will owe the same money but if i was in that area i would go csl as it does what it says on the can and will do more then 20k without a rebuild and it will start every morning

i agree i work for a motorsport company and ive had a m3 on loan and a m5 from a couple of lads in the workshop tbh they dont feel nothing special but they are good every day cars comfy fairly quick nice crusers a few toy's but fail to feel a specail car ! but maby im the wrong person to say so as i dont like bmw's , but i own 325 e36 purely for transport as it was cheap BUT this feels specail

yes the engine is in bits but only cos i want more power & and its done 96k so it was a choice of bang or no car for a while
after 10 years of ownership it still puts a smile on my face when i drive it...................soon

A genuine 350bhp rwd Sapphire should be as quick in a straight line - the extra 20k for the BM buys you cornering finesse, a better standard chassis and a nicer exhaust note

I think the reason these are up for breaking is that some one buys a saph for 2000 - 3000k. Then realises that its going to cost another 4000 ish to get it right with engine and body fixes. They realise they cant afford it and decide to break it. You can get Saph cossie ownership fairly cheapish but you will be probably buying a bucket of sh.ite and alot of folk cant afford to fix them hence they break them. Its a shame really as i see decent looking saphs up for breaking all the time ( probably better condition than my own) and i think that the owner just cant afford to get it fixed.
Anyway, goodnight from Dublin.

The people that can just afford to buy one, can't afford to run it properly. The people that can afford to run it properly mostly prefer a newer car so the actual number of well-maintained ones is small.
Happens to many old fast cars - e.g. look at an F/G reg E34 535i - cost a fair old bit more than the Sapphire, nice old bus when going well but people don't generally want to spend the money to keep it going so they get scrapped. Even the M5s don't fetch much from that era
