Hello - really fancy giving mapping a go, always have wanted to.
What sort of books have people used? Or where have they learnt how to map?
I know a tiny tiny tiny bit of how to map, but really not that much!

A very good book by Dave Walker, from Emerald is published by Haynes, book number
H835, entitled Engine Management.
This is more a general book but is excellent and does go into a bit of detail regards mapping.

I reckon you'll probably find its one of them knowledge is power kind of subjects where people are reluctant to share the knowledge as the less everyone else knows the more people will go to them that do.

learning the true fundamentals of the internal combustion engine is what you need to learn aswell!

Cheers guys :-D
At the moment I have Automotive Engine Management and Fuel Injection systems.
Is it a case of just giving it go with a wideband?

Thats how I began. I bought a cheapo motor, stuck megasquirt on it (hardly autronic I know, but works just fine for what I want ie learning cheaply), and went from there.
Its similar to guitar, piss easy to learn, fucking impossible to master

I think the key thing is knowing about ENGINES not mapping.
When I started mapping I had never read any book on the subject, but I did have a fairly large amount of experience of tuning cars by other means ie carb/dizzy etc
Some great books out there im sure, but I think that just getting stuck in is the best way like with most things in life.
Im sure Lewis Hamilton wouldnt have got where he did just by sitting at home reading a book on how to drive, lol
Get a car, get some management, map it, learn from it. Thats my advice, obviously if you throw a couple of good books into the mix too it will help, but ultimately you just have to get stuck in at some point.

Well ive not melted a car yet out of all the ones Ive mapped, and the last one I mapped did 169mph in only half the length of RAF woodbridge (less than a mile from a standing start) so seems pretty piss easy so far, but like I said, I was starting from a position of already knowing about engines and tuning in the first place.
Im also very computer literate which helps with picking it up (although is the LEAST important aspect of learning to map really, like I said, its about the engine not the computer)
