I wrote my 2000 off. Its a cat c. Could be repaired, but can i get my private plate off or have i got to repair my 2000 before i can put the plate on to another car. It'll be a shame to loose the plate.

I would still enqiure about it. Ask your local Licencing office it's there decision at the end of the day. You may have to wait a while though.
It's like, if your car was stolen you must wait 12 months and see if it has been recovered before you can claim it back.

A mate of mine had similar with his saff that he smashed up. Beyond repair, trust me it was bad,
anyway, applied to have the plate put on retention and the local DVLA office needed to inspect the car, so he had to trailer the wreck to the office. All they were really interested was the fact that the vin was genuine on the donor vehicle. The fact that the car was still currently MOT'd and Taxed meant they couldnt refuse to do the transfer.
He said their faces were a picture!!!

It needs to have a current MOT, doesn't say how long AND must be taxed
OR have been taxed in the last 12 months AND be on SORN which must have been continuous from the last tax.

I'm pretty sure you have a few month's after the mot runs out to do it, I rang up to try and get a plate off my merc that had been off the road, they asked how long it been i said a year and that was too long, Iirc they said has to be done within 3 months.
This is to make it able to transfer your plate if your car has failed its mot and your not planning to get it repaired you can still transfer your plate.
