I've had a search on here already but i'm a bit confused on the whole iphone thing.
Are they really that good?
Is there anything coming out that might be better? I've seen some fancy toshiba one.
Why the fuck cant you send pic messages?!
I see there are various hacks/progs etc but i'm not sure i want to arse about too much on an expensive phone...or is it easy enough?
What is jail breaking?!
I'm with o2 so swapping the phone is easy. But is it worth buying from the states etc? Or are unlocked/hacked ones easily caught out and bricked? Can you update software on an unlocked one?
Tetxing is only qwerty keys yes? Is there predictive txt? If so does it show a list of options as you type or must you press a button to rotate through options? wifes new viewty is the latter and i FAR prefer a list of options to see and scroll like my sony.
any other hints/tips?
18months is a long time to be pissed off with a phone!

Yeah, the picture messaging flaw would annoy me after spending that sort of cash on one. Major oversight imo that the Star Wars light sabre noise doesn't really compensate for.......

i do lik my iphone, its unloacked and jailbroke runnin orange, has some very trick little gadgets and uses, but it so easy to get frustrated with it, there is an application you can get to do the mms, as for txt its just like writeing on here, you see a qwerty keyboard and you press what you want it to say, dont think there is predictive txt if there is i dont use it either way lol. and tryin to txt on the move is something you have to get used to the backspace button will become your best friend.
unlocking is any network sim being used but obiously if you dont use the O2 you dont get the free interent.
jail break is so you can use applications not made by apple.
i find mine very slippery and easy to drop out of your hands(oooo er) and keepin the screen clean/greese free is a nightmare!
hope that was a little help

You don't have to hack your phone to be able to and mms. There is an app you can download for that! Which is what I use.
I send approx 1700 texts a month, and as you can see have no issues! LOL there is a predictive text but not like normal phones and it does take a while to get used to!
I'm also typing this while I'm on my phone, and I feel the web browser facility is far superior than any other phone I've used!
I've got my email, photos, music, some funny apps everything! I love it!

I woudn't get one mate if I where you,
i've recently gone down the same road as you and came up with a few options and it was shortlisted to the
Iphone
LG Renoir
N97 - not out yet
Decided on the Renoir in the end and i'm very happy with my chioce, yes you can't get all those fancy apps you can for the Iphone but thats because my phone has them as standard. Texting is a doddle with large on screen buttons if you hold the phone upright (like a normal phone with buttons) and if you turn it to landscape it has predictive qwerty - must ve the same as your mrs' viewty i'd think![Top](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/smile011.gif)
Lg renoir is far superor in nearly every way IMHO and it's a step up from the viewty aswell mate![Wink](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

Chop - I went from the W880 to the I-phone, and it's class.
Use the Ipod every day on the train, but it is a bit crap for texting. Takes some getting used to.
As a fun phone though, it's very good....

Great lifestyle accessory, rubbish phone, IMHO
I was all set to get one until I borrowed one to try it out, and its just rubbish as an actual phone for what I want.
You cant text without looking at it cause the buttons have no physical footprint, the MMS thing is shocking, the battery doesnt last long.
The net stuff is really good though, and its a slick interface, and great as an MP3 player, its just as a basic phone I think they suck.

I dont like the more modern HTC's though, as they dont have a proper keyboard on most of them, its on screen rubbish like the iPhone

You need to have a 'go' on one to see if you get on with it. I think the interface is awesome. As with all Apple products they don't unecessarily overcomplicate things and it's very intuitive to use.
There are literally thousands of apps, and anyone who claims their phone already has all those features is just lying! But you may not be an 'apps kinda guy'!

It's the most annoying thing in the world - "guess what i've downloaded this super cool app that actually lets you send - wait for it - a picture - thats right a picture via messages!! OMG Iphones are the best cos apps solve all the worlds problems" where as i'm more of a - "what? you need an app to do this? Pfffft, I phones lick balls"
Admittedly I do like the UI but it's nowhere near good enough to make up for all of the phones pit falls, most phones available to buy now will wipe the floor with the iphone. So thats reason enough not to get one!!

Iphone is the best phone i've had, by far.
There are some little issues i dont like about it, but the pro's far outweigh the cons!
As an example, i recently needed the number for my local doctors surgery....i launch the browser, search google and can see the number on screen, i click the number and it dials the surgery...in total about 20 secs from me remembering i need to ring them to when im actually talking.
PS: I cant believe someone said that you can't text without looking....i mean seriously!!!??? Is that SUCH a bad thing? lol.
I wont go back to another phone though, this one does too much to bother with others!
Shazam is also cool btw

Ive yet to see an app that does anything I want my phone to do personally TBH
The only things I want from a phone are:
Phonecalls
Text messages
Picture messages
Web surfing
Mapping with traffic
Play music
Send and receive emails
Have a physical qwerty keyboard
My phone does all those, but an iPhone doesnt, and even with apps, it still doesnt, all the tacky trendy kids stuff it does do, doesnt make up for the fact it doesnt meet my basic criteria.
So personally Im not lieing when I say my phone does all the things an iPhone can do that interest me from a phone, Im telling the truth.

Chip - an iPhone CAN do all of those things!
Lee - im pleased to see im not the only one who sends silly amounts of texts!!
Chop look here:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/
The predictive text predicts the whole word as opposed to just the next letter, which is how i think your sony works doesnt it?

Repost? Fuck off .....
The iPhone is a piece of shit, and
so is your face.
No, I'm not going to get an iPhone, quit emailing me about it. I'm not getting one because I already have a phone that's better: it's called the Nokia E70, it's the pinnacle of human achievement, and I love it more than my family:
![](http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/gramps35.gif)
You've probably never heard of the E70 because Nokia's marketing team is busy finding every last dick in the universe to suck, so I'm going to do their job for them and tell you about this product. And no, I'm not being paid to do this. I'm just tired of the iPhone fanboys shooting huge sticky wads and high-fiving each other (literally) over their stupid cellphones.
First of all, the E70 has a full keyboard, not some shitty stripped down, tap-and-pray smudgy piece of shit. Nokia uses a technology that's even more advanced than the iPhone's tap screen, allowing you to actually feel the keys you press as you're pressing them! The technology is called "tactile response," and it allows you to do things like dial a phone number without staring at your screen like a shit-chucking ape. In fact, every other cellphone ever made has this technology, sometimes called "buttons."
On an iPhone, you have to press an additional button that opens up an alternate keypad that will allow you to type numbers and punctuation. So typing something as simple as elipses (...) requires you to tap your finger 9 times. Enjoy your phone, losers! People like me who have shit to do will stick to a keyboard that doesn't have its lips wrapped firmly to the user-interface equivalent of a throbbing dong:
![](http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/iphone_keysuck.gif)
When the iPhone was first announced, CEO Steve Jobs spewed enough BS to cover a football field full of babies 3 feet deep in bullshit, which sounds cool because he could have potentially murdered a football field full of babies, but he passed on this opportunity by introducing the phone instead. He claimed that the phone was three devices in one: an iPod, a phone, and an "Internet communications device." Oooh, an Internet communications device?! AWESOME!
![](http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/holy_shit_iphone2.gif)
It's not three devices in one any more than my laptop is you morons. Using Jobs' loose definition of what constitutes a separate device, technically my laptop can be considered 8 devices in one:
The Nokia E70 not only plays mp3s, video, has a full browser and Wi-Fi, IMAP and POP3 email, and Google Maps, but you can even run terminal software to telnet or SSH into remote servers. What that means in non-geek is that my phone is invincible. I can literally do anything. I can reboot my web server if I want, and sometimes I do just because I can:
![](http://maddox.xmission.com/putty3.gif)
All of this power from a phone that's over a year old, and it only costs $360. Even the browser kicks ass:
![](http://maddox.xmission.com/e70_web8.gif)
Here's a non-biased, side-by-side comparison of some key features of each phone:
iPhone Nokia E70 Resolution: 320x480 352x416 Storage: 4 or 8 gigs (fixed). Unlimited. The E70 can use hot-swappable 2 GB mini SD cards, so you can have as much storage as you want.
Can customize ringtones with your own mp3s:
Can record video:
Screen turns into a smudgy piece of shit after a few minutes of use:
Can send MMS messages:
You have to send your phone to Apple when the battery dies and risk getting your phone lost, stolen, or damaged in transit: Yes. No. Plays MP3s:
Holds your phone hostage to Apple for new software updates because Apple won't allow everyone to develop applications for it:
Voice dialing:
Can record voice:
Instant messaging: No. Yes. Can't do fundamental tasks like copy & paste text: Yes. No.
Double negative, bitches!
There you have it: the most objective comparison of two cellphones ever made. I think I'll take the rest of the afternoon off and copy and paste text on my cellphone because I can.
4,169,402 people who bought an iPhone hadn't heard of the Nokia E70 until now because Nokia's marketing team is too busy tossing salad to get the word out
The iPhone is a piece of shit, and

A clock
A calculator
An "Internet communications device"
A phone (I can make voice calls with my modem)
A pornographic media storage device
A video player
A word processor
And an "iPod" (see below)
There's no such thing as an iPod. The word "iPod" is a marketing tool for a hard drive with software that plays mp3s. Yeah, doesn't sound so sexy now, does it you chimps? And an "internet communications device" is officially the douchebaggiest way of saying "it has a browser." So actually it's just a phone that plays mp3s and has a browser. SNORE. An "Internet communications device"
A phone (I can make voice calls with my modem)
A pornographic media storage device
