Default BMW 2.0D smoking (sorry!)

Brothers got a 54 plate X3 on 73k.
Using a lot of oil just lately, smokes like a train (grey/blue).
Looking under bonnet front boost pipe (I presume) and intake lots of engine oil inside, and switch/connector near bottom of pipe is covered in oil and outside bottom of pipe is too.
Does this mean a turbo fault, or something blocked?
Really not clued up on these, done some digging turbos seem to go a lot, but boosts ok.
Thinking some kind of EGR issue perhaps??
Thanks

turbo's are very bad for going on these but there is also a oil seperator on this model which is a servicable item that needs changing this can also cause smoke ect they are not that expensive i would change this first before the turbo route as we have changed trbo's in the past & its been the seperator.if you pm me your last 7 digits of the chasis number i will get you the part number you need in the morning

WC21264 mate.
SOunds like you know a bit about these, I've not a clue!
What's the score?
Any idea where it's located?
All of a sudden started smoking and drinking oil, but still goes ok, well no slower than always...

Either way sounds like it's not a fucked engine which is nice!
Thanks for your help.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...68&hg=11&fg=15

Items 11 and 15 in the above link arewhat you need to be changing - part numbers are all there, take no notice of the prices but you will be looking at about £45ish from BMW

Not too bad then!
I take it the breather gets neglected and never serviced?
Was thinking some kind of breather, but looking under the bonnet decided to ask rather than look and look and look

Rhys, where above are you looking??

Thats right mate it gets one about 60k , be aware i have seen loads of them running on the engine oil & wrecking the engine if the turbo goes.its getting to turbo mileage to be honest.i work for a bmw dealership as a warranty administrator so i see all of these common faults.Turrbo isnt a cheap fix unfortunetly if you buy a genuine turbo you will get a 2 year fitted part warranty

It was a company car so presumably serviced at main dealer when it should have been, sounds like this wasn't replaced? Just the seperator service item, or that breather too?

They got it cheap and want to get rid of it now, just it's started using more oil than diesel

If turns out to be turbo, is this within a time and mileage to be warrenty?
If not are there alternatives?

Cheers

Im sure its a breather / seperator i will find out exactly in the morning it can make them smoke like mad. its not in warranty anymore mate you could ask a local dealer to submit a goodwill to try get bmw to make a contribution but as its over 60 k miles this is unlikley. . Im sure andy gallacher got a turbo for a x5 from vince ozbourne at cr turbos might be worth trying him be cheaper
