Default 500hp Turbos, for a VR6??

Right guys, I know NOTHING about turbo compressor maps etc, just can't get me head round them!!

I have managed to find the only Skoda Felicia Pickup in New Zealand, exported by fellow Brits, great find eh?? Anyways the 1.9d engine is poked and I fancy a VR6 conversion and also a bit of boost.

Now I would like to eventually have around 500bhp, but I would like full boost by around 3500-4000rpm latest. The yanks all run massive turbos and I understand that gives the drivetrain less strain. But they also quote 450bhp at the wheels at around 15-20psi so I am not sure I trust all they say

So what do you guys suggest? And AR sizes ect would help too, but I can check them up, just so I know what turbos to choose(Garretts can be expensive here!!).

Turbo choice is much more critical on smaller engines.. but as yours will be a 2.9 litre (or whatever) you pretty much have a free choice.. An RS500 T4 will do it.. a GT30 will do it.. both of which are pretty flat out at such power figures.. Realistically a T61 would be very happy/efficient at 500bhp and you could probably get it to spool before 4000rpm with your displacement, if the engine is spec'd correctly.. that'd be my choice!

Drop sales@c2motorsports.co.uk a mail, they specialise in supplying forced induction stuff for VR6s - I've been in one of their customers mk2 VR6 turbos with a GT35R and it was an animal.

GVK, I remember your name from ClubGTI when I had my Mk1 Gti

C2 is probably where I will get my Software but due to shit exchange rate between NZ and USA I will probably source turbo here.

PaSjo - Cheers, I don't want to be ringing the balls off a turbo, would rather have bigger and less boost, will do some head work too, try and stay out of surge issues......

Small world eh! How do you find NZ?

I'm just trying to think which a/r GT35 they used, it was on the C2 42# (440cc) software , pretty sure of it. Bloody flew!!

Another mate, again on C2 stuff has a VR turbo on a GT3076R, 360 bhp 400 lb ft @ 14 psi on a Dyno Dynamics rollers - his problem is the turbo spools up very early and he keeps stripping 4th gear, he's going for an 02M (6spd) box which are meant to be more durable.

NZ has it's good and bad points But not bad yes.

That's my main worry is the transmission, hence thinking bigger turbo and less of a midrange spike, boxes are pretty thin on the ground here so I can't afford to be changing too many. Might have to see if I can find an 02M, is the conversion simple enough???

Is the C2 software as smooth as it appears?

Again it comes down to finding one here though, if I make everything to fit a Holset and then it fails I need to know I can find another.....

02M needs a bespoke flywheel and clutch, few different mounts and shafts need shortening IIRC , the guy with the blue one is doing his atm, i'll find out exactly what needs doing.

Some pics of his flywheel set up here http://mk2vr6.com/board/viewtopic.ph...25&hilit=helix

C2 stuff runs/starts/and has driveability as good as stock judging by the two VRTs I've been out in, they use a 4" MAF housing to 'trick' the ECU into adding more fuel for the larger injectors. Explaination here

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=157169

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothrea...ostid=53420183

I'm running the C2 NA software on mine and am pleased with it.

Cheers GVK, will go have a read, don't want to get in to bespoke stuff too much, so probably just deal with 02A boxes

Do you know if the standard inlet becomes restrictive in any way, why do the yanks run SRI's??

I think the main reason is to make the I/C piping simpler and allows them to fit chargecoolers 'easier' too - there maybe more scientific reasons but that might be a question for someone else Less heat soak too as the stock inlet runs over the cam cover.

Both the VRTs I went in ran stock inlets, they went well enough.

GT3582R with 1.06 turbine would be spot on but i'd be very tempted to go to a GT4088 twinscroll, .95 or 1.01.

I reckon a GT35r. I was talking to a lad I know who has one with a GT3076 on running 450bhp and he said if he was to build another one hed put a 35 on. Apparently even with a massive turbo on the lag isn't stupid.

Very similar spool up to a GT3071 but with a 600 bhp potential.

Can someone explain the GT series numbers, is a GT3071 a GT30 with a 0.71AR by any chance?

hx35 with a 12cm housing will work well with this, and as for fitment,t3 flange,so easy.

Starting to make more sense, looks like it may have to be a GT Series though, having a look around the only Holset I have found is this and have a feeling it's too big.

Many reasons including size and fabrication but mostly because they wank on about V8's over here and they really don't drive well at all.

I am spoiled working on Audi/Porsche but the Aussie V8's are shit for their size, and then the chassis they put them in are even worse, you can't even put down what little power they have.

I am sure the engines tuned right and with a decent chassis could be good but they ask silly money for standard engines so I am going to try and show them how a Skoda "Ute" can go hahahaa Think 500bhp should see off most V8's.

Your going to hate me then, the guy that runs our Japanese workshop(his missus and mine work toegther too) has an XY GT that we go to car shows in quite regularly Slow as fuck though

Don't get me wrong V8's sound IMMENSE but they really not that great as standard.

And I am absolutely hooked on the V8 Supercar racing, but then they bare no resemblance to what you buy for the road hahaha

true true. same as the touring cars here.... and a ford mondeo i spose or like the lotus cortina, proper legend status, but any old diesel would make one look silly nowdays.

and i do truly, truly hate you . The closest i got to one was at the car show in sydney. shannons had a stand there, there was a ford AVO escort no1 (from nz infact) a brit had shipped it there in the 70's and they had an xy gt which i had a good nosey round. other than that i just used to see the odd one cruising round but my god.

i dont suppose you could get any pics of it could you? i've always fancied a white one wit h black stripes. really awesome cars and they get top respect from me

I will get pics for you yes, it's red and black. But very nice.

I know people here are daft about them, but I would much prefer RS500/Mk1/Mk2/Escort Cossie or a Skoda VR6 Pickup

You've abviously never been to NZ mate, chances of me finding E85 in most parts of the South Island are VERY remote hahaha, lucky to find LPG for the Rangey half the time.

I think a GT30 sized turbo with spacer gasket would be perfect, would like a HolSet HX35 after reading up and should do 450bhp and can be pushed to 600bhp if I get some traction. Think it will be laughable in a FWD pickup..........

I do have 2 turbos from Discovery 3/Range Rover Sport TDV6 engines in the shed, they make around 195bhp each but would be a lot of fabrication and arsing about.
