Default Help Needed Please

Hi
Could someone help me out please. I have an R reg 1.8SI Escort, and of late it has started to cut out when I stop, it does not do it all the time and starts straight back up with no problem, the thing is when it did it the other night I had slowed down to turn left at the traffic lights, it cut out the only reason I knew was the steering was hard to turn and I nearly hit some bollards.
Could it be the air flow meter? this has been mentioned to me but i have also been told that if it was this then it wouldn't start straight away like it does. I had put injector cleaner in. Can anyone point me in the right direction before I have to spend on all kinds before finding the problem!
Thanks in advance

Jan
