Cat D is to my knowledge not on a list, I have bought lots over the years, never needed a check by anybody other than mot if that was out, never a mention from dvla or anyone else.
The age plate doesn't always work as I had a "Y" reg mk2 escort first registered in 1980, HHK366Y.

Cat D doesnt need and inspection after repair but stays on for life. Cat c write off would need inspection to make sure identitiy of car as alot of people were nicking a car then swaping the chassis nos and its a check just to make sure thats that hasnt happened and to cut down on car crime but still stays on. If they checked to find this and couldnt identify the year of the shell if say you shell changed it then could go on a q. Cat d means really that repairable but insurance decided not to repair cat c normally means stuctural damage but beyond economical repair but can go back on the road. Cat a/b cannott go back on the road and will only sell to a breaker. It has an impact on insurance as if you buy a cat c then write it off they would pay less out so be carefull. Cat c cars normally re sell for alot less as cat d people dont see to be so fussed about.

Hope this helps all this information is on the dvla website. and quite helpfull.

Cheers

My other half's Mazda was awarded cat C status for a crease in the door! Until you have a VIC test completed, you won't receive tax reminders, but as long as it has an MOT it's allowed on the road.

3 years then heals it self

so why are there so many old rs's that were wrote off in the 90's still recorded ?

these abcd's etc change from time to time, you could years ago autolign a right off and get them reclassified but it got stopped. i stopped buying rightoffs when it went to cat c's needing vic checks that took to long to get a slot and checked out just so i could get a logbook, vans on a cat c don't get vic checked and a mark on the logbook, whereas cars get a permanent marker if cat c, i just can't be bothered trying to sell a car with "i'm a rightoff" on the documents, at the mo cat d or cat x seem the best of the lot as they don't have anything on the docs.
