just shows hope quick you can get stuck this has made me think that if it happened to me i havent even got a blanket in the car or anything that i would need
so nows the time for me to do something and more so because ive always got my little girl out with me..
altho we havent had bad snow in years and today is like a summers day outside i will put something in the car just in case

what conditions exactly?
untill 10mins before she was stuck we had NO SNOW, or ANY SIGNS OF SNOW IN THIS AREA
otherwise do you seriously think she would have travelled?
it had been raining all day.
had we have been aware of the pending snow storm, i would have popped out and hired her a uni-mog

how were we to know yesterday was any different from any other day? as i said it was hammering with rain in the morning, hardly what i would call snow conditions.
i had rain 10 miles away, it was a freak storm, i dont think anyone could expect what happened. if it had just been snow im sure she could have coped fine, but 18inches in under an hour is hardly normal, especially in such a localised area

i would have been well screwed if it was me that got stuck, all ive got in the boot of my vectra is a piece of sheet metal, some jubilee clips, and a sanding block, so unless i suddenly find 4 friends going by the names of hannibal, BA, face, and murdoch, i think its safe to say id be fooked!

you don't have to be ray mears (that's a good one, i'll give you that benni ) to realise that there is a high chance of snow as it has been forecast and reported during the last week do you?
fact is, she should have been better prepared. it would not have prevented her and all the others getting stuck, but they would have been more comfortable.
i don't need to prepare especially for it as being a refrigeration engineer i regularly go into freezers that are -20 deg.c so have plenty of the correct apparel in my vehicle. but my mrs prepares herself as she takes 2 stretches of motorway where it is quite possible to get stuck. we have seen it before in germany and recently in this country.
nobody should be complacent about the weather and just assume that they can get in a car and gallivant about the countryside without taking any responsibility for themselves and taking a few simple steps to ensure their comfort and survival. it's not difficult is it? surely even jade goody could get that into her thick head?

well you are the minority im afraid,
as over 300 people were caught completly unaware last night...and not one of them had the equipment to whittle up a hotel room for the night from there boot
it was a freak storm, you cant ever prepare for that.
christ you make it sound like she was going on a road trip, she was only popping 15 miles down the road

...and she would have done it 'to raise awareness', thats the most important thing here. people need to know that snow is cold

i remember as a kid when we used to have proper winters in the countryside where i grew up (not that long ago before you cheeky young pups chime in as i am only 35) that everyone used to carry a bag of salt/sand, a spade, warm clothes etc for every journey in the winter. it used to be standard equipment and only sensible for the time of year and conditions that could happen.
now we just want to get in and drive and expect the local councils to grit and clear every single road yet don't want to pay much council tax.
as for being only 15 miles - that is not far for a simple car journey but you try walking it in the snow without the proper kit in the night and then see if you think it's so trivial. we've all got too soft over here

who was walking it?
and what else do you expect her to carry?
she had spare clothes, a blanket, food and drink(cold) a mobile phone, a coat
i dont really think she was un prepared at all
im sorry if you dont approve, but we are not snow storm experts, we havent had snow like this since 1984, and at that point we were 4 years old.

i can understand you defending the foolish actions of your lovely wife, but you're being ridiculous. of course she could have prepared for it as we have all been aware of what the weather has been doing in other parts of the country for the whole week.

if she had enough clothes to be warm and enough food and drink to survive, then i can't say as i'd be overly bothered. no different to her spending a night out anywhere else really.
i thought i read earlier in the thread (can't be bothered to trawl through it again) that she was really cold?
and wasn't she in a queue with 200 other poeple, so hardly on her own?

in a queue with god knows who.....i can think of plenty of places id rather my wife be overnight

so she was cold, so she hadn't prepared with enough extra clothing and blankets then. which is where we were hours ago
just face it, you're acting like a poncy townie when i thought you devonians were proper country folk who could handle a bit of weather
