Looking for a new tv.
A samsung plasma 50 inch is 800 quid.
A 42 inch samsung lcd is about the same,
Which is better quality picture, and how long should a plasma last?

anything bigger than 40" and you really are into plasma territory, LCD just cant cut it in comparison
a 100hz plasma 42" looks so much clearly than the equivalent lcd, especially watching non HD broadcasts of football n stuff.
new generations of plasma are a lot more reliable too, they dnt suffer the dreaded 'burn-in' due to the pixel refreshment, and they run a lot cooler too
so if ur thinkin 50", go plasma dude

LCD or plasma?
Death or cake.
Plasma all the way - far better on movement and blacks above 40"
And yes, I do know what I'm talking about, it's not opinion - I've been designing the equipment your films have been post produced on for 20 years!

funny that, my mate who works for Sony, told me that plasma's suffer with screen burn....
goes the guy who goes around the country selling/doing Demo's of there products is wrong....
i'm just about to buy a panasonic viera 42inch plasma but the screen burn thing is worring me.. the pc will be hooked up and i m ure i ll leave it on.. i know i can use a screen saver but they are a bit shit! will i get a windows start button on my screen?
if u try and leave any sort of menu function up on any up to date LCD/plasma, the menu wil shift around constantly to avoid burn in
plus if u zoom in on a plasma, u can watch the pixels refreshing themselves, shifting about, again to avoid broadcast logo's burning in
old units used to, newer 1s much less likely to

Most agree Plasma still has the edge picture wise for 40" plus....
Very few LCD can do 'Black levels' to match a good Plasma set, and many mid-priced LCD' suffer motion blur compared to Plas'
LCD tends to be brighter, but this can be used to mask other defects & never had any issues with lack of brightness on Plasmas i've owned. Screen burn on modern, quality Plasma screens now will only happen after a very long period of fixed image (most have built in sensors to reduce)
LCD/Plasma should not be the choice, more importantly check for 1080p, 24fps, 100hz, conectivity & contrast etc...
Buy a issue of What Video & Hi-Def of Which Plasma/LCD before you even think about buying.....will be the best Ł3.99 you ever spent.

Also, i've just been round my Grandparents, they've got a 46" samsung LCD HD 100hz or whatever it is, the quality of the picture is VERY good, will a Plasma be better than this?
This is the 1 i'm looking at,

Only 760p, crap contrast ratio, no 24fps & pretty certain it's not true 100hz (widely reported after testing)
As I said above, before you spend your hard earned' you need to get the odd Which/What mag' or two, otherwise your just buying blind and the chance of getting a good 'un is probably 1 in 100......
Yes menu's etc will move around, but with sky they all have logo's in the top corner, these don't move at all. You know, Living, discovery, etc etc. This is my worry.

i think most manufacturers have had to sort the issue 1 way or another otherwise they would put themselves out of business with warranty claims
Dont to death an google has all the answer but;
at that size plasma everytime
and newer models DO NOT suffer from burn and my 3 year old LG has never
if you can afford it then panny is the only choice unless you really flush then the pioneer;s are the daddies

tis funny cos i aint had a problem with it,and we have 3 kids so the bugger hardly gets switched off!
maybe mine is a exception....
ifi pause the sky for longer than about 5 minutes, the little mark stays there for the next 30 or so minutes as it slowly fades away
but if i turnt he telly off then it stays there until i've turned the telly back on again, then it goes
so i've taken to leaving the telly on for a few minutes to start it shiting beforewitching off
subtitles also tend to leave little lighter rectanlges on the screen

i bought a panasonic viera 1080 42 inch plasma and i couldnt fault it at all. a factor too is the size of your room. there is a recommended distance that you should be from the screen which affects picture quality. no point having a 50 inch screen in a 2 up 2 down sitting room
I got a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD and regretted it almost instantly as I wanted bigger. The quality is awesome and all that but I love watching films on HUGE screens and I love toys.
I was looking around for a 50" screen then realised it's like when you start tuning a car, you get bored with it quickly and always want more. So why not start with the biggest you can get and do it properly with a projector?
These are great value, 1080p and depending on the size of your room can project up to around 15 foot screen size. No matter what anyone says though, they're not ideal for watching unless your room is a bit darker [curtains drawn and/or at night] which is why a normal TV behind it is a good idea.
I'm afraid we're all out of cake, we weren't expecting such a rush.

Got a 42" panasonic PZ85 and can't fault it either. 1080p with blue ray is superb, and on screen burn thing, play GTA4 for a few hours and the little compass thing on the bottom left will stay round for a while, but does fade away eventually..

My Samsung 50" plasma is a fucker for screen burn. 90" of the logos on channels are transparent, but ones such as discovery turbo arent. If you watch turbo for half an hour or more then expect it to do damage.
However if I don't watch turbo for a couple of weeks then the image does go!

I spent the extra cash & got a Pioneer 50 plasma. Its the mutt's nut's.
I've had plasma's since the early years, & screen burn isn't an issue as long as you don't leave it on a static image for hours.
Just take care of it and run it in properly & you'll be fine.

Panasonic - Makes the complete units, Supplies Toshiba, JVC, Fujitsu and more
Sony do not actually make Plasma's they use Fujitsu/ Hitachi screens
Pioneer owns NEC and has switched production to the NEC lines. The new 50 inch and the 42 inch units are all NEC glass. To tell if a 50 inch is Pioneer or NEC, check the resolution, If 1280 it is Pioneer , If 1365 it is NEC . 42 inch Pioneer Plasma TV is NEC
Philips - Uses Fujitsu/ Hitachi glass screen and most internal components
LG / Zenith - Make their own glass in Korea
Samsung - Makes its own components in Korea
Toshiba- OEM from Panasonic
I would choose Panasonic all the way, these are the best units bar none imho

i disagree my pioneer is 10x better than my parents panasonic!
Are you comparing the same generation screens, screen size and budget when you say this.
If you compare the latest generation Panasonics plasma's against the latest Pioneers in the same price range, I personally think the Panasonic is a better screen and better value for money
Mind you we all have different eyes and your opinion is as valid as mine.

Let me correct this.
Within a given budget I think the Panasonic units stand out.

Mind you the pioneer/nec screens are still very nice, the rest is down to my personal preference.
If its not a Phillips its ok by me

I'll have a look in WHSmiths or something for the mag, but surely there not likely to be reviewing TV's every week?
This 1 looks a bit better then, visually it doesn't though.

I couldn't find that mag, any other views on the tv linked above? Think it looks the best all rounder.
I made a point of buying one of the last generation Pioneers when I heard about the change still the best IMHO ahd still rated highly by others.
If I had to buy one now though I would agree & probaby get a Panasonic.
Either way they are both great sets.
