I had to use one of these shock doctor ones for a little while, as i lost my proper one and had the same problem, all i did was trim a bit off the back and on the verticle inside bit at the back trimed it so it doesnt go as far up the gums

i had a custom made one from the dentist that i trimmed to make it fit better around the gums

it also had a bit of a sour taste to it so i left it overnight in a tub of water with a touch of mouthwash in and over the next few days it was minty

Which type is it exactly?
The v2 and gelmax youve just got trim away as i find theres to much gel gets sqeezed to the back when you bite down. I use the old v1.5 or the pro, both without gel and they fit great. If that fails might be worth trying the gravity gaurd, fits onto the bottom and restricts breathing far less.
