Window Etching
Hi,
Just wanted to check something, if a car has has a replacement window and is it possible that anyone can re etch it. I seem to remember you can buy kits to re etch the window.
Reason I ask is my Saph has smoked lights when its 2WD so someone has swapped them but they have managed to etch the smoked ones with the chassis number, and one other thing iirc correctly wernt the earlier sierra's etched with the registration number rather than the chassis number and if so why has mine been etched with chassis number. Was this a factory option to have this done, thought it was standard? Car is a 1990 model.
Be grateful if anyone has knowledge of this,
CheeRS
Martin.

Im sure this must be able to be done, however from my knowledge of etching chemicals used for silicon device fabrication only liquids such as hydroflouric acid can be used to etch glass.
I'd also be interested to find out what else can be used.

Cheers guys,
So i'm guessing Ford must have stamped the smoked light lenses as well as mine have the chassis number on them in the correct place as well and exacly how the original lenses would have been stamped in fact if you did not know better you would think the lights came with the car but it coulden't have as it's 2WD.
Still interested in why some have reg numbers and other have chassis I'm pretty sure it was in 1990 it changed.

Hehe this takes me back to me old job with the stensil when we used to security mark IT equipment used to use a blob of acid fluid and then use spatular across stensil. Can burn you if you get it on your hands.
Well that would explain it then as I always thought myself they were swapped as I always belived it was only 4x4 that had smoked but that would explain the chassis number. The front door speakers are as you say square and the speakers are white in colour. When you say facelift what was changed?
I am aware of the change of around 1992 or earlier when the petrol cap filler was remotely operated from inside the car and dash changed etc but mine isn't that model.
I'm guessing then there was another change between before the above facelift which is what I have?
Many thanks,
Martin.

We do it at work (Autoglass) but only do registration numbers, not chassis numbers. Pop into your local one - it's only £1 per etch! Can only do it "instore" tho as the techs don't carry around a printer to print the stencils out
