they just massively ramp up the fuelling as it makes more power, but they also make more smoke, and can fail the MOT

they have been known to damage cars too, so if it was an expensive car you would be better off remapping it, as this makes more power, and often increases fuel economy too

There are some good ones - but even the best ones still stop the ECU cntrolling the engine.

This means the ECU thinks its doing one thing and the engine is actually doing somthing else...

You get all sorts of funny faults and running issues with these...

A remap allows you to leave the ECU doing its job and everything continues to work as it should.

They often tend to give bizzare power curves as they cant combat the ECU torque limiters so ECU takes over anyway. Theres only one correct way to gain more power from a modern turbo diesel. Thats to get its control software recalibrated to do what you want it to do.

Do you mean common rail era Stu?

I've been wondering about tweaking my mums 306td....

I've been told I can advance the pump timing one tooth and up the boost..... sounds a bit heath robinson for my liking though, or is it?

Wouldn't up the boost myself, but timing you're probably along the right lines.....

But if for some reason the ECU cuts it out at high revs etc then you can just put it back
