i thonk the cardboard will be ok, just the black tape might be a problem ! !
i designed a straight taper inlet like that years ago, its still part finished in my garage, didnt have tig back then, the escort will be sporting soemthing nice though

I thought that, alot of flat metal with the pressure, won't it need some sort of bracing on it?

yip i saw that, was a bit grinder happy! yeah i was going use small dia ally pipe passed through it prob a couple, and also say i use 3mm ally i will get a 3mm grove milled out the plenum plate and throttle body flange so it slots in and not depending on the weld and it will also be welded on the inside, then both mating faces will be skim when finished.
