Default Radio licence!!!!

i had a woman from the performing rights association call me today asking if i had a licence to play my radio in the workshop! WTF
a new law has been passed and it now costs you £134 a year to play your bloody radio if you have a few employees listening to it

are they taking the piss?

youd have thought the radio stations licence to play would cover it but it doesnt surprise me. no radio played= less advertising of songs available and less sales. good plan really.

Bring in your favourite slipknot cd's and play them all day. I'm sure your bosses will soon change their minds

sorry to say you are wrong there mate , they can raise a court action against you
we had them in our work where we have 150 employees and also play the radio to customers on hold , was going to cost us 3k plus per year , i binned about 4 letters and blanked all the calls , lasted about 6 months till summons to appear came in
needless to say our radio is now off and some of the guys have thier " own" radio to listen to and if someone else should happen to hear it then , well , what can you do
another way round it for us was to get digi box and play radio through that as wee already have tv licence

get 2 radios ,1 at each end of your office/workshop and tune them to the same station .that dilutes the ratio of people listening and avoid the need for a license?

e2a: although saying that, you probably need a pub type license to braodcast the tv to more than 1 or 2 people. They'll get ya one way or another! Go for the 2nd radio idea.

Is the 3 employees including you? If so inform them that your at the limit allowed and if they ask whether any customers can hear the radio explain that they aren't allowed in the workshop due to H&S

have it on the telly, just cover the screen with something

or issue each employee with a radio so they can listen to it themselves

or just tell them to bu their own and put it through expenses so that you don't actually have a company radio on site

What a shit law. I thought Offcom had given up with all this crap. They couldn't stop the pirates so lets take down the limited companys playing their radios! This world has got some serious issues.

They can't proove it though. Say if they come in tried to stop you just ask your colleges are you listening to it and get them to say no. How can you 110% proof that someones is listening to the radio in an open envinoment?

I don't know if this is in Ireland, but:

Its just like putting a speed limit on racing!
Its total and utter bolx. Its not like artists etc. first intended on scavenging money from radio listeners in workplaces. They probably don't care with the amount of money they make from one single!
Some smartarse thought they'd make money from it and is obviously making major cash now.

If they came to my door and threatened to do me for it, i'd probably smash the radio in front of them.
