Default Performing Rights. What a joke... really!

Just recieved a letter through the post informing me that it is illegal for me to have a radio on in the premises that either:

1) Customers
or
2) Employees

Can hear directly, as to do so i need to purchase a performing rights license! This country is driving me nuts now!!

Now i am not against performers etc getting their royalties but I was always under the impression that radio was free to air and the station dealt with licensing and royalties?

There was a show on Radio 2 about this ages ago, it is true, and is a total joke!
IIRC, there is some sort of rule regarding how many people work there, so it might be worth looking into before paying up

Well to be fair....

A bar has to pay for it so why is a garage any different.

Can't have one law for one and a different one for another...

Its usally overlooked cause no one cares but maybe they are screwing everyone now.

You couldn't make it up, although they did back down in the end.

Because a bar is "using" it to entertain paying customers.

A garage is using it to entertain private employees.

I would ignore it.

Stu,
What radio? You DON'T have a radio - I'm sure you got rid of it several months ago, as it was too distracting .

I'd carry on mate and wait for them to turn up, if they did turn up just write a cheque for Ł90, and throw it on the floor and ask the tw4t to leave!

they come around to check sadly. they did at my mums place and its only a quiet little craft shop in the country. she pays Ł50 a year and you get a sign to put up to say you have the licence too.

stupid thing is, does this payment actually go to the performers? or is it one of them payments that goes somewhere else? anyway what ever way it is, if we didn't listen to the songs we would never buy them

It is NOT a new law though!!! Get it into your heads!!!

It has always been there, but only recently they have been clamping down on it.
Atleast they are not asking for back payment!

What do MCPS and PRS do with the money collected?

MCPS and PRS pay money collected to their writer, composer and music publisher members. Both organisations are ‘not for profit’ and only deduct a small admin/commission fee to cover operating costs.

I remember my 1st employer getting that over 24 years ago now so its hardly a new law.

We thought he was just using it as an excuse as we had a piped system with amps and big speakers and the local neighbours were always complaining.

He brought out the letter as proof to show us.

So we made him pay it - as he was responsible for the concequences

i thought entertainment licenses were different to nightclub late-opening and drinks licenses?

it might not be that expensive to get an entertainment license for playing radio/cd's in a garage or salesroom anyway?

i remember years ago, a nightclub we used to go in had put up signs saying "no dancing because entertainments license has expired" yet it was still allowed to be open till 2am? but the law might have changed since then.

We had the PR people phone work 7 times in 2 days! LOL! We have one radio in our office, its only on quiet as we are on the phones all day! My boss told them we had got rid of the radio and that was that, he also had quite a pop at them for phoning on several occasions and asked to be removed from any calling list which they agreed to! LOL!!
