We claim for tools, but then again, the company owns the tools and not the mechanics, unlike alot of dealerships do around here.

someone in our main dealer has done this, only inland revenue has paid the money to the company, not the individual. it's now being chased up, but in the meantime IR have lost all his original tools invoices.

Thats true & if you are VAT registered you will be charging VAT on you total turnover applies above circa 65k turnover so for self employed only.
Think their is confusion here, tools can be claimed usually as a fixed sum as an allowance against your tax code you will have to prove its above the fixed rate if you want more, chances of getting much somewhere around zero & bugger all.
For the self employed your accountant will be claiming this already if your paye you will almost certainly only get the fixed allowance.
Im afraid even a Labour goverment wont pay for its workers to lose his tools every week even if Mr Brown is a nice chap..

Yep thats right. When i was a self employed brickie i got 'tax allowance' on the old SC60 system for tools, clothes etc....well anything to get a penny back lol. Think folk are mixing this up with getting VAT back !
