recently pricing a job in manchester for partitions and ceilings, a new office block near the MEN.

we found out some rates that a rival firm were paying there fixers for partitions,

£2.50 for metal (thats the stud)

.80p for board, those are both per linear metre.

now that mightnot make any sense, but bear in mind that my company has NEVER paid below £3.50/lm Metal and £1.60/lm board, its a huge difference! fixer prices are going south, and the lads are not happy, but its how companies are winning jobs!

its a tough time out there for anyone in construction.

my dads been made redundant from a Project Managers position in a very big company.

im very lucky at the minute as my company is v busy, just hope we can keep work coming in, our estimator is pricing jobs alllllll the time at the moment just to get as much work as possible.

Lots of people work outdoors all weathers and graft hard for a lot less... not saying they dont deserve it, just saying im suprised that theyre talking about earning twice what i am even though i myself have a skilled trade behind me and also work shifts <- real tears... honest

How many soldiers over in Iraq etc do you see lifting £4k a month take home pay? They work pretty hard in all weathers all year round, sometimes dodging bullets too!

we can and still do manage £900-£1200 as joiners on price work over 5 days finishing no later than 8-5pm. its not all the time but still regular enough.you do have to work like fook all day long but if theres an incentive of decent money to be made i will do what i need to do. regular take home for 39 hourly rate pay as a joiner is £500+.
its is going to get worst for a while though but were hopefully in a good place atm that should see us through to the end of next year. my worst this year has been a take home of 460.my best monthly take home this year was 4350. thats a lot of money by most standards

Nah they dont get a grand every week and even if they did, they would have to have no holidays to get 52k!

Its a thing that happens in construction ALL THE TIME! Someone says to a bricky/plasterer/joiner etc in a pub, what you earning then...and theyll say oh a grand a week! When in reality, they are probably lucky to top 40k per year by then time holidays are taken and the weather has played its part.

yup was gonna mention holidays, time off etc, being self employed you dont get holiday pay at all! or sick pay! or much else!

and being self employed IMO you need an accountant and maybe a solicitor, so there fees have to be taken out of whatever you earn....

grand a week soon gets swallowed by tax man, retention, citb, accountant, travel costs, etc etc etc
