Smile Mondeo st220 - what they like?

Been toying for a new car for weeks, but cant really find one I really want, been looking at jags/bmw's for luxuary etc. But last nite a spotted a mondeo st220. Its within my 5k budget, nice colour, red leather, good mileage, history, sat nav etc. What are these like as daily users etc? pro and cons of any experience would be helpful also the main change in facelift model, except gearbox? Stu.

I like them

dont like the red leather though - it was a £500 option! I much prefer the black leather.

They're good cars, Jeremy Clarkson loves them...

they are reasonabley quick for a 4 door saloon, very good spec aswell but are very thirsty typical 24mpg average the price od them is droping like a stone at the mo, the change in txation is a big factor, although the announcement this week of a change to this might help..
one of my friends has just sold his 53 reg facelift one for 5.5 k with a 1k plate left on and another one has his low mileage one for sale for sale at the mo for just over 5k

facelift models got 6 speed gearboxes and interour trims changeds, but nothing else visable

it's all under the skin so you HAVE to take a chassis number to ford to buy bits for it

Great cars. I had a lazy tappet in mine so have a good old listen hot and cold but other than that nothing to report really, on mine anyway.

Rusty doors were done under warranty as already said and the economy isn't great around town, I usually got around 20 or 21 but could get 29 to 30 on a steady Mway run.

Haggle some extra money off for the red leather as it will be hard to shift on come selling time.

Prices of these are coming down all the time so there are plenty of bargains to be had.

There is a question over whether you can tow with these cars and I have never seen a definative answer either way.

Get as many toys as you can as there were a lot of optional extras on these cars.

Sat nav
Tinted glass
Leather seats, Raven or Red.
integral booster seat in the back
park assist
Xenon lights
and more I expect..

I rate the ST as one of my all time fvourite motors, but then again I also would look for one with red leather.

Very often got 'ours' down to single figure mpg, but average was 12-15mpg. But we did drive it hard!!!!!

Used to have a picture as my avatar, but due to new rules at work I deleted it.

my boss ahd the same problem, silver st220 estate, had the red leather option, and all the other options, rotted along the doors.

fords wanted to paint the doors. he ended up giving them the car back and getting a deal on a new tdci ghia X estate.

apart from the doors, what a LOVELY car, went like the clappers too proper motorway muncher

This is a petrol, try a 330d/335d and report back anyway.

My M3 averaged towards 30mpg, and would do 160 unlike this.
More power, german, correct wheel drive, better mpg, not an option?

On the original question, I'd say they're superb, by far the best used sports saloon for the money.

Even if you look into slightly higher priced used sport saloons, they can still come out on top. Just take a look at some of the comments on this other forum below, including how a guy admits that the ST220 totally rogers his BMW 330 on performance...

330's just a nippy cruiser to be fair and quite lardy, correct wheel drive though.

They do look good value for money

Yeah the 220 is a bit lighter isn't it. Can't remember exactly and haven't looked but there's something like 80 or 100kg difference I think

Hmmm car stat site says Mondeo is around 50kg's heavier!
Must be a heavy old lump, lot heavier than the 200.
330 has better power to weight so you'd have thought it wouldn't get left behind.

About 90 lighter, depends which version of 330, about 6%.

As a crude p/w calculation, if the 220 has 226bhp, the BMW needs 240 to compete, then there's also the bigger drivetrain loss. Any ideas on that part?

EDIT!!: Oh, just seen what you said. We must be looking at different sites or different models of 330, I meant the E46.

154 against 146 bhp per tonne in favour of the 330 according to site.

128 vs 124 roughly speaking after losses per tonne in favour of 330.

Lol I'd have thought they'd be very well matched, difference being the driver really.

Mind you your typical mondeo driver is a fat cunt I've noticed, so will slow it down a bit; and if bmw uses bmw lane correctly he won't be able to overtake even if he could

I suppose there's gearing, or that tendency for the 220 to have more power than claimed. Not sure how true that is though...........

Could be, 'adjusted' for an insurance group or something.
Bmw's are always a little less as people quote their ps as bhp, hence the 321 ps evo never making the 321 bhp people think it should
Not sure on Fords, but even my M3 handbook had it wrong.
Makes little odds at 100 ps/bhp, but 300 it's 4 or 5 out.
Started work at 4am, so will leave it at that

one of the managers had the 220 then the 155 st Diesel

The 200 was quicker but the difference was 280 miles to tank petrol, 520 miles on the diesel, so it was a pure running cost at 23K a year.

He average 24 MPG on a steady run and around town was usually about 17-18mpg, gunning it 10 mpg
