People are not given cars; I will explain. People who are Registered Disabled are entitled to an allowance. It doesn't matter if you work or not because how much money you have is irrelevant. You don't get Disability Living Allowance because you don't work, but because you are disabled. There is Higher Rate DLA and Lower rate DLA. The people on the higher rate can trade in half of their allowance for a car. So therefore, the car is not free.

Your car is paid for monthly at a price of about Ł180 and for this you recieve; Tires, Servicing, RAC membership, and the car of your choice with free insurance. The better the car, the more the deposit. So a Ford KA would be nil deposit, and a Ford Focus would be Ł150. Your monthly payement will always be the same, regardless. You can get many cars, including Mercedes, Audi, and so on. However, the deposits can go up to as much as 8k+. You keep the car for three years, and then it is swapped for a new one again with a deposit etc.

The scheme is there so that the Disabled don't have to worry about Mantainence, and on the whole I have to say it's a fantastic scheme. Please remember, because we have the Motability car, we loose half of what we are entitled to, as a disabled person. Your personal circumstances do not come into it, what-so-ever. So when people come out with things like 'He gets a free car because he doesn't work' need to control their Ignorance, jealousy and downright stupid behavour. A lot of people think we should be entitled to the one car, and the one car only. But why? We pay for it, just like everyone else. So we will rightly pick what we want. Not to mention some smart arse who told me we should all be given a Renault Clio. I'd like to see you fit a wheel chair ramp to one of those, heh. Many cars are adapted from the factory, higher seat, steering whele controls etc.

Some of the perks of the scheme, which I find fantastic are as followed.

At anytime, I can phone up and change one of the two drives I have on my car insurance, for free.

At 16 people can drive when Disabled, which would then entitle them to a brand new car, at 16.

The RAC cover is fantastic, I have used this on many occasions and it's always been good.

I hope this helps, any questions you have, feel free to ask.

These are the cars and prices.

has it changed over the years though?

my dad was offered to be made disabled by the docrot because of his knees and explained that all he had to do was essentially hand over his bus pass which was the equivalent to about Ł3k a year and he would get a car of his choice

this was about 15 years ago so probably before it was as wide spread as it is now

Bus pass is local authority issued and NOTHING to do with DLA, so he can have a car on DLA mobility AND a free bus pass.
Also despite what people think you do NOT need to be on HIGH RATE mobility to get a bus pass, so long as your doc signs a form stating you suffer severe pain upon walking is enough.
Though this and a few extra tiny bits is pretty much the qualifying conditions for dla mobility, he should also apply to local authority for blue badge, if not already.

15 years ago in london, things were different as you had free travel within the london boroughs with your pass on tubes buses and trains mainly wihtint the M25, he would had to give that up to get a car, but now he's nearly 70 it's not going to make a difference as it's now virtually across the whole contry that pensionsers can get free travel

I get a motorbility car as the wife's in need of a lung transplant. Quite a good scheme really as the only outlay we actually pay for the car is for fuel, everything else is taken care of by them, tax, insurance, servicing, tyres, repairs, brakedown, ect. As for the cost to us I think she lost part of her benifit, about Ł48 / week.
There is a price list of what cars you can get on the net, can't remember the site tho. Not every car is available ie the sporty models as we wanted a focus ST or astra VXR but they were having none of it

Must have changed since then, as you can defo have both now, but might depend on local councils own rules as there is no set rule for free bus pass, varies slightly from place to place.

What I said mate. A close friend of mine has a new Fiesta and is 16 with a full UK driving license. I am also entitled to a bus pas with the car, and have been for a while. Although you can't get a Focus ST, you can get a Fiesta ST. Also, under the age of 25 is limited to Insurance group 8.

I think(but not 100% sure) that condition dependant the age can be 15, as I'm sure someone I know who has brittle bone disease had his car at 15, think he just did the std disabled car test like myself.
