The A10 Thunderbolt II
Designed for "tank busting" and close support of ground forces, the A10 has a Gatling gun the size of family car. In Kosovo and more recently in Afghanistan, A10s fired thousands of DU rounds. Fuel tanks seal themselves punctured by any fire. Cockpit protected by titanium plating. The 30 mm GAU-8 Avenger which fires that DU ammunition. Hydraulic controls backed up by manual systems in case power is lost

my favourite plane!!!always used to love seeing them at RAF Alconbury when i was a kid.the engines and tailplanes are also positioned to flow cold air into the jetwash to reduce the heat signature to make it harder for the SAMs.never seen a plane that can take off quite as aggressively as this too,went to an air show where i swear the pilot just pulled back at correct speed on runway and went vertical from the ground!insane!

the usa has never sold a10's 2 anyone else (no one wanted them

and i dought they will start now as the production lines for them shut down years ago!
pitty rearly that most airforces prefer to buy multimillion pound fighter jets that cost stupid amounts 2 fly and 2 maintaine that can drop Ł20k pound munitions from 20000 feet on 500 pound pickups in afganastan and iraq!

i love the A10 watched em do target practice at donna nook up lincolnshire way years ago .. awesome noise when that cannon goes off ...
