Default ib5 gearbox

anyone on here used a quaife gear kit in one with a big power turbo engine ?? quaife only rate them at 175bhp but surely they will take much more ??as after all what do ford rate the standard gears at ?? as we have all seen them take 250+bhp .
i just cant see how the standard gears will be stronger than the straight cut ones

gearboxes are rated by how much torque they can take....they are torque converters.

I'd consider what the application would be..how the torque is delivered etc

It's the torque that kills gearboxes. I think for a high powered N/A screamer doing 200bhp and a turbo making 200bhp, the gearbox would have a much harder time on the turbo application so depends what torque you are going to be putting through it I say.

The quaife gear ratios are usually pretty short for n/a engines.. not really suitable for turbo use.

I had the same dilema years ago re standard vs Quaife IB5 gears. In the end I reckoned that the Ł1500 for a IB5 Quaife kit could buy me a lot of standard gearboxes, so I left the standard one in. After 4 years abuse I had to rebuild the box with new bearings, apart from that it was fine, and that was with running over 250 Lb-ft through it. Though I do run lower boost in 1st and 2nd gears.

As mentioned previously the Quaife final drive ratio was aimed at high rpm N/A engines then, but I see they now do a 3.85:1.
