Default Smoking in Public Places.........

heard on the radio this morning that they may be banning smoking in public places, what are your thoughts on this? I'm a smoker and I ain't lookin forward to going down my local and not being able to have a ciggarette with my pint, on the other hand, I don't like subjecting non-smokers to my second hand smoke. But most pubs now (mine does anyway) have a non-smoking section and surely thats enough to keep everyone happy? Personally, I think this Government are RUINING QUALITY OF LIFE for people slowly but surely Think of the amount of people (and plenty on this board) who are now emigrating to sunnier climbs!

Whats everyone else's opinion?

i have worked in a nightclub for 7 years and i say they cant do it quick enough. you say there ruining your quality of life but surley thats back to front if you cant smoke in public then your going to smoke less and probably live a little longer

in 20 years people will look back on us and think we were bloody mad to smoke shit that is baisically killing us anyway!

I don't mean they are ruining quality of life just for smokers, for the public in general, the government now seem to be against anything that can be described as 'fun' or 'nice'

and I am not describing smoking as 'fun' or 'nice', just that it's an example of them clamping down on things that bit too far IMO

i would welcome such a move. nothing worse than coming back after a night out stinking off smoke. and separate areas for smokers / non doesn't work unless the ventilation system is really good, and it's not in most places.

do the government not see the flaw in their plan!
If it goes ahead they will go 'bankrupt' in about 2 yrs! if they ban smoking in public places then revenue from beer will drop exponentially!

I'm for it aswell!

In perth/sydney (one of the two) in Australia, im led to believe the only place you can smoke is within your own home!, harsh, but it works, smoking related deaths have dropped dramatically.

The pub trade will go downhil.. thats for sure every positive carries a negative i suppose..

but aye, I hate going out, coming back in stinking of smoke

In all, I'm in favour of a ban in public places.

It's in in Ireland and IMO is a right chore. Especially on a cold night when ya have to go out for a fag
It will happen over here but not for a few years I don't think. It won't do the pub trade any favours, everyone having to come outside if they smoke. Looks untidy aswell, makes a mess everywhere with fag butts.
Smoking/Non smoking areas is the way to go I think. I've been working in clubs for around 7 years now so can appreciate how bad it can be but I doubt it will change over here soon.

I hate smoking, the smell/smoke makes me cough bigtime. If people want to smoke then its upto them, but aslong as it doesnt affect the people who dont want to be breathing it in.
Smoking areas are a waste of time unless they are closed off seperate rooms!

If the Gov really wanted to stop people smoking and all that then they would stop the companys making em!!

But wait,,,,oh no,,,,they'd loose too much fooking money

If people want to smoke, then at the end of the day thats down to them!
As for in public places,,,,it may stop people doing that, but its not gonna stop em smoking ay!!

First ya can't drink in public, then ya can't pi** in public,,,,, now ya can't smoke in public,,,,,,whats next then ay

When they introduced the ban over there it was just coming up to summer so people didn't care cos they could sit outside and smoke away while drinking.
A couple of my cousins own pubs over there and they have noticed a considerable drop in income as the weather has got worse.
I'm not saying the ban is a bad idea, at the end of the day if you were liable to get fined up to £1500 for breaking the ban (like in Ireland) I'm sure you would change your mind. I just think it needs to be thought out alot more that's all.

Doh never thought of that!

people complain about somke in pubs.. or when they are eating... however they chose to go in that pub, order food in there.. and couldnt of failed to notice the smoke before hand (if it bothers them that much) Why dont THEY go somewhere else..
Its common knoledge that people smoke in pubs.. they allways have done, you cant IMO expect to go into a pub and not be greated by the warm homely smell of smoke!
If you dont like it go to your new fandangly pubs that dont allow smoking.. just dont bother smokers by saying 'oohh smoking is bad for you and me...'
you have the CHOICE on where to go if you dont like smoke go elsewhere!

I'm not saying it's as important as peoples lives I smoke, I chose to smoke, I don't condone it but at the same time why should I be chastised if I want to go out and have a smoke with my drink/meal???
Smoking/Non smoking zones are successful when they are done correctly.

With Nikki on this one, what happens when everyone gives up, where are the government gonna get all their tax from then? Its probably the main reason green isn't legal yet...

I'm an ex smoker and I don't mind people lighting up around me, but in resteraunts and pubs I'd like to eat some food without the smoke around

Just cos theres a non smoking section doesn't mean the smoke doesn't travel through it.

The revenue will be gained initially from fining people who flout the law. Then they'll probably tax the arse out of us in other ways as usual.

Exactly, thats what we should be aiming for IMO, everyone in this country, smoker or not has one thing in common, CHOICE.

You choose to go to a public bar, club, whatever, then you choose to mix amongst smokers and non smokers. It's a way of life. It needs a damn sight more thought put into it.

I'm all up for it myself

On the tax subject I think you'll find that the money that's brought in from selling cigarrettes does NOT cover the drain smokers put on the NHS, never mind anything on top (at least that's what I read) They can't just make cigarrettes totally illegal & put all the cigarrette manufacturers out of business as it'd also put alot of people in the dole que!

Glad it will be banned
If smokers want to feed their drug habit, they can do it in their own house..!
Why should the rest of us have to suffer stinking of smoke after a night out?

Don't smoke so don't really care that much as don't wanna die off other people's smoke, but perhaps there should should be a system of awarding smoking licenses so that a small number of pubs in each town/city could allow it?

Only problem with this is the pubs who don't have that license would cry about trade being taken from them.

I'm for banning smoking in public places, but what annoys me is that the governmentare going to ban king size bars of chocolate because apparently there worse for you than normal chocolate its bulls***.
