I hate the smell of kebabs....
I cannot stand the sight of piercing....

Does that mean that all that have to be banned from public places and that people can only dress / drink/ eat kebabs..... in their own homes only????

The way we are going, we will all be told how to dress when going out, wear the same hair cut, live in the same houses....

Its all about choices after all. Year after year, choices are being restricted for the sake of a few well thinking good-doers who only want perfect little sheep at the detriment of the individuals...

I am an ex-smoker and to be fair, I hate the smell of smoke. But if I want to go out, I'll try to choose where to go accordingly. And if I can't avoid it, well so be it. I still have a choice: staying home or going out!

Not a single one of you has mentioned the most important thing.

If it gets banned then people wont be forced to work in a smokey atmosphere.

It's all well and good going on about the smell ( i hate it to, and smokers for that matter! ) but, it might mean that the poor bastards who are subjected to working in it through no fault of their own may not die of passive smoking related cancer.

Which is good

Smokers make me inhalethe smoke, a byproduct of them smoking.
Beer makes me urinate.....if I had a drink and went and pissed on a smoker would that be ok?

That's it isn't it. I'm a bit on the fence with this one thou cus I'm neither a non smoker, nor and addicted one. I can do months without one but then someone will offer me a cig as the pub and I'll smoke it.

I think this is just another civil liberty the goverment is taking away from people. If you dont want to breath in people smoke, go start up a non smoking club, end of story.

Cant wait till they ban it, so when you come in after a night out your clothes dont stink.

Also, we often goto the pub for lunch, about 5 non smokers and one smoker, and it seems that for this one guy, the rest of us have to sit in the smoking area with him, fucking stinks

Roll on the Ban!

Thats all well and good through rose tinted specs, but if you have a family to support and HAVE to earn cash then sometimes you just have to get work where you can.

Plus the employer has a duty to provide a healthy working environment.

The government announced plans today to ban smoking in nearly all pubs, cafes and restaurants in the country, unveiling the Public Health White Paper − a long-awaited policy paper on the nation’s health.

The proposals encompass all establishments serving prepared food, including many pubs − just falling short of a total ban on smoking in public.

The debate on whether Britain should follow Ireland, Norway and New York and ban smoking in public places has divided opinion. According to our poll, 73% of Wanadoo’s readers − over seven out of 10 people support the ban in days leading up to the announcement today.

Scottish Parliament decided earlier this month to ban smoking in public buildings from 2006 and Liverpool voted in October to ban smoking in the workplace.

Supporters of the ban say it will protect people from the dangers of passive smoking. But tobacco and alcohol companies, including pub management firms, fear the proposals will cost them trade. Others say a ban is evidence of an interfering "nanny state".

The White Paper also includes plans to tackle obesity and address the way food companies target children through advertising, and spells out firm government plans to legislate, although there is no guarantee they’ll become law.

Deaths from tobacco-related diseases have dropped during the past decade, but smoking still kills about 106,000 people each year in Britain, the Health Development Agency said last week.

Despite efforts to get people to fight their addictions, about 28% of men in England and 26% of women smoke.

Many countries, including Norway, Malta, Canada and parts of the USA have imposed similar bans. Even heavy-smoking Russians face a clampdown on puffing in public places courtesy of a bill adopted by parliament on Friday.

that's a discussion going on for ages overhere in Belgium.
We are NOT allowed to smoke in trainstations, some restaurants and other public places but we can still smoke in the pubs (they are never gonna be able to forbit the 'no smoking' rule in a pub).

there's nobody outthere to look after that the new rules are being respected so keep on smoking

Can't happen soon enough

I'm tired of my clothes being impregnated with the stench of tobacco and getting headaches because I chose to go out somewhere that allows smoking.

My guess is that it will eventually be regulated like prescription drugs (over here anyway) by the FDA. It should be already, but the governments lawyers are not as good at the tobacco company ones.

I recon, that it maybe because in most countrys ( ours included) The governments recive alot of money from fag companys, either through tax and from them directly as sort of legitimate protection money, to protect there buisness

But most pubs now (mine does anyway) have a non-smoking section and surely thats enough to keep everyone happy?
The non smoking area in me local is alot smaller than the general pub, my point being why should non smokers have to go sit in a small portion of a PUBLIC HOUSE to protect there health when the smokers get the run of the full pub. Should it not be the other way round?????????.
Also can a smoker answer a quick question what are the benifits of smoking??????????(im sure you all know the downsides lung cancer, amputated legs etc)

Ban the ciggies completely!

I used to smoke and now am very intolerant of the stink of these things.

Smoking/No smoking areas sound great but the smoke moves across. Besides, if 12 of us go out from work, even though only 4 smoke - guess which section we have to stay in all night?

One final point - am I the only muppet in here that has had clothes burned by arseholes waving their fag about in a pub/concert etc?

what the fuck is this all about
If you dont want to breath in people smoke, go start up a non smoking club, end of story.
Why should the majority be persicuited. Smokers are the minority so a designated clud/pub for smokers would be more like it, not the other way round. Imagine a pub for smokers only you would need a lighthouse on the bar so you could get a pint in.

The trouble is, Al, that even though smokers are the minority you already need a lighthouse to find the bar in most pubs!

I've been told that Irish pubs smell of farts and stale beer now that there's no smoke to cover it, but even that has to be better than what we put up with now.

The site im working on at the mo has a shared baitroom and it fucking stinks of fags and what makes it worse is cause its now cold all the windows and doors are closed. Me and 2 other lads have been religated to the van. WHY THE FOOK SHOULD I NOT HAVE ACCESS TO SOMEWHERE WARM TO EAT CAUSE OTHERS CHOOSE TO SMOKE ITS JUST PLAIN SELFISH i think i might just go in there and shit on there table.

[quote="Alps PacinoAlso can a smoker answer a quick question what are the benifits of smoking??????????(im sure you all know the downsides lung cancer, amputated legs etc)[/quote]

What's the benefit of drinking?? Drink alcohol - feel merry - get higher - get worse - develop kidney failure????

Smoke - get high - feel good etc, etc.

I don't know why I started smoking tbh, probably peer pressure at the time but now I do so out of choice. I enjoy it, the same way I enjoy going out and getting hammered!!
If the smoking ban comes in the way the government have outlined today then I don't think I'll be too bothered, however, if it turns into a total ban such as in Ireland I think I'll be looking for a new job as night clubs in particular will suffer badly as they aren't geared up the same way as a pub to cope with punters coming in and out after having a fag

If the government bans smoking it'll leave a HUUUUUUUUUGE gap in tax. Where do you think they'll get it back from?

Booze and Petrol Which will hit non-smokers now.

At least the smokers are paying for your hospital treatment when your lungs give up

I think the taxation bit won't make much difference as has already been said a heap of funding goes toward the treatment of smoking related deseases. However, if it gets to a level where cigarette companies are forced out of business the country will suffer from higher unemployment so it's a no win situation
