Default Lest We Forget

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
It's Rememberance Sunday tomorrow, for those of you have don't know about the History of this day and it's importance i strongly advise you to spent 5minutes of your life reading here.

No greater love hath a man, than this a man who lays down his life for his friends and his country,

will be thinking about all of you tomorrow

Two years ago I finished my 7 month tour of Iraq on Remembrance Day.

I remember the journey back from the airport listening to the Remembrance Day Parade in the minibus. I don't think a word was spoken amongst us for the whole journey

At the Holiday Inn in Doncaster where I stayed for a couple of nights last week they had a sign on the reception counter saying staff would be observing the two minute silence on both Remembrance Sunday (tomorrow) and Remembrance Day (11th).

It went on to say that although they realised not all guests would wish to honour the fallen, they should respect those of us who do.

I thought that was a lovely way of telling some of the arseholes who surround us every day that, for just a couple of minutes they should shut the fuck up and think of others instead of annoying us all with their pointless, self-centred selfishness.

one of my favorite Churchill speeches of all time :-

"we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

the young'uns of today could learn a thing or two about Pride a Patriotism if they boherd to read up on churchill

and the greatest ever :-

"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour"

I am very impressed by this thread and the way you guys think of it. The 11th of November is for us Poles the independence day, commemorating our regained independance after 123 years under boots of foreign occupiers, yet not too many people talk about it in their private lives, and I haven't seen a one thread on our internet forums about it, most people leave the celebrations to politicians, honour guards of the armed forced etc. Tbh I am a bit ashamed of that .

It's great that you remember about the servicemen and civilians who made sacrifices for the better future

Born at the end of the 2nd World War, Rememberance day was a biggie back then & its great to see the respect that the latest generation is showing on this thread . I will be leaving soon to attend my local memorial service.

and don't forget how lucky you are living in this country compared to other parts of the world.

we have no natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes etc to deal with (except the odd bit of rain now and again)

we have a welfare state

we have a national health service

we have a temperate climate

we have opportunities for education and improvement

we have a democracy and freedom of speech and religion

overall, it's a pretty good place to live and we must be grateful for those who sacrificed their lives to make sure that it remained that way

In Flanders field the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. ~~By Major John McCrae, May 1915.~~

went to florida this january and went to waterworld where every serviceman past and present american or allie was asked to stand and recieve a round of applause,it wasnt a spedcial day holiday or anything, you can say what you like about the yanks they honour theit servicemen and women, not that we dont but it was around that time a british soldier was told to go out of uniform to hospital after returning injured from iraq so as not to offend non-brits who may be there,WTF!

these guys should be honoured for what they do for us on a regular basis not just annual.

it will be a sad day when the last ww2 veteran is laid to rest, again thankyou for all that has sacrificed................

When I was at school, one of the girls in my class brought a load of photos in that her grandad had taken when they liberated a prison of war camp, it was for a project or something she was doing. In those photo's there was also a bull dozer, would it be the same camp or were all camps run the same way? tbh it hit us kids...seeing it in books doesnt really mean much at that age as your constantly looking in books but, to hold a actual photo that some one had taken at the scene brought it all to life and gave it depth.
