Default Porsche 928 V8... some info on what they are like, parts and other interesting stuff

I have the chance to buy a Porsche 928 V8 as a project think its a 1987-88 model, not too much needs doing mainly a service, brakes and a few minor items. Offered to me for a grand next spring, once my cash starts flowing again....

Would like some info on cost of the parts for these and some info on general reliability, performance figures and anything else that would be an interest to me.....

My Girl Friends dad has an S4, they look like sharks i think. Big jessy of a car with alu wings and funky pop up lights! They are properly made too, think it's on a G plate never been restored or re painted and looks like the day it rolled out of the factory. Done 130k too. It is an auto tho but has a digital and analog dash thats sweet

Retro cool of the highest order in my book

A mate of mine had one, did a few bits to tidy it up and sold it for a healthy profit. don't think part stung him too bad, and he reckons its no worse to work on than some modern fords.

anyone know why the spoiler is on hinges?

So you can change the rear blade and open the boot with the key more easily.

The 928 v8 engine is a great piece of engineering but from my experience, the biggest problem is the fact the block is aluminium with nikasil plated(alusil) bores! Allthough the plating is around 10thou thick on these blocks once the bore is worn, there really is no easy fix. Allthough I have tried, I have been unable to find anyone in this country prepared to rebore and re "alusil" a porsche V8 block for me. (due to the size of block apparently!) This means that if you have engine problems a rebuild is almost out of the question, and the cost of parts is high. A set of genuine 8 pistons will set you back around $2000. (I get my porsche parts from the USA)

The actual engine is VERY strong, though the head gaskets are prone to rotting. They use a reinz head gasket that looks very much like a cossie gasket, but just like the cossie after 20years they will have rotted severley, and hence could well give major problems for you. The problem is made particularly bad because of the open block face design meaning the head gasket does'nt actually sit on much land, and hence the gasket disintegrates into the water system!


Personally I would avoid any 928 that has covered over 150,000 miles as the alusil plating gets very worn at the top of the bore on this milage. Find a 100,000 mile genuine example and it will go on for quite a long time yet!!

ALso most tend to be auto's, so try to find a manual if you can!

could you not linner the block and ditch the nikasil plating?
Just intrested 2 know as i dont know 2 much about nikasil!

The Workshop manual says you can rebore the blocks....

did you struggle to find anyone to rebore the block or re-apply the alusil coating?

If it is the coating, did you try Sermatech ( think they call it sermALcote) or Component Coatings?

I remember reading an article somewhere years ago where a guy had twin turbo'd a 928 using 944 turbo pistons to drop the CR.

Apparently dimension wise the 944 bottom end is half of a 928 V8.

no sensible info but i always fancied one of these. can't remember which one... s2 was it? the one reknowned for killing people anyway..
been so long since i was considering one!
