Default Buying a Bike... Info Needed Please :o)

Im thinking about buying a bike for local travelling (About 10 miles per day) as parking in the local areas has turned to shit and trying to park without paying £10 per day or so is not gonna happen!

So Ive decided to look into getting a bike as parking is free/easy in most places and traffic, etc would be good to avoid

I would love a GSXR-1000, but I dont have a licence and am not able to get one at present (Personal reasons).

So what can I get other than a hair dryer (Go ped) without a licence? Looking to spend no more than £3000 and would prefer it looking quite sporty.

Thanks for any help

The Esc Cos can sit there and get rarer mate

Im not riding a push bike cause thats toooooooooooooooooo much effort each day and if I decide to do longer journeys I would have to take me car. The point of the bike is to save mileage, petrol and parking

Dreamer, its medical reasons mate. I am able to take the test (Full car licence, over 21, etc) just other things are stopping me at present.

I have ridden a few bikes, such as a GSXR-1000 and R1 in the past. Had not much confidence on them, but was teaching myself to ride. Only covered about 200miles!! I did go to get my own bike, but the finance was rejected at the time (This would of made me get my licence if the finance was approved). Im gutted I never did the test anyway

RS125's are a good fun little toy mate, and for a 20 mile round commute it wuld be spot on. de-restrict them and there around 30bhp.

always run em on good plugs and healthy fully synth 2 stroke and they will go forever!! i loved mine and miss it like mad.

Exactly what I was going to recommend, do 95mph & 0-60 in under 7 seconds derestricted. Might find a brand new older model for 3k.

they can be restricted though-unless the laws are different in the Uk-33bhp for a learner yeah?

Might not be what the guy is after fair enough but i'd prefer a restricted bike to a scooter

scooter's aren't so sporty lookin.......... and if he drops a 10-15 yr old zxr its not goin to cost the earth

For a short journey as suggested I'd get a simple machine such as a Gilera Runner 125. If you do your test you could go for the Gilera 180, bit more poke. Yes it's a scooter but if its just for work mileage it will be alot less maintenance and cheaper than maintaining a bigger bike. Cheap on fuel too.

Can only ride up to 125cc as a learner in the UK.

Graham a 125 start off Scooter then a 172 upgrade with the suitilbe carb, gear up kit and you have an easy 70mph doodle scooter, 95-100 with gear up kit (tbh i wouldn't 0-60 was 6.2 against an Audi TT 225 with me on it 15st)

My mistake-over here its anything below 25kw or 33bhp in old money-you have a choice of 2 licences-one upto 125cc one upto 25kw when learning

So you could buy the zxr and restrict it for 2 yrs till your fully fledged

is it he same over there 2 yrs restriction?

Won't be great on fuel, and some may argue about the reliability.

No doubt it would be fantastic fun though! I would love one after a brief go on a friends.

my 1st big bike after 50cc was a gsxr600 fantastic bike, would have got bored of a 400 with in the year so that would be my choice.

just had me a little confused by the 1st post saying
"So what can I get other than a hair dryer (Go ped) without a licence?"
as you need at least a CBT to ride anything.

If its medical,

And this means you have had your car licence suspended then it will mean ALL scooters/bikes/etc will be off limits.

You can ride under 50cc without a full licence but you do need SOME SORT of licence rather than none at all !!

Blade, Snoops, it's not that type a medical.

My first bike was an x plate Ninja 600, 6 months & I was bored so hopped straight on an o2 plate R1 !! Loved it till it got nicked off our drive in Streatham !! I was on holiday at the time !! Waited for insurance & finally got the gixxer thou brand new !! Never looked back & loved it !!

Stephens rode all my bikes & can ride so 400 would bore him too death in a couple days !! I recon it gotta be a 6 at least !!

I have got a GSF 400 for commuting and it is really the best of both worlds. its pretty nippy but is also very good on insurance (£109 a year) and fuel. not the most desirble bike but worth every penny

Thanks for the sugestions I've looked at some of the bikes and it's opened my mind a bit more.

I would like a gsxr 1000,but I have no idea when I will be able to do my test. I'm not banned in anyway, just I have problems that restrict the distance I can travel. So doing a test is not possible unless it's on my doorstep and no where else lol.

I need a bike for short journeys mainly as parking in town is shit and with my health issues carparks are a no go area.

A big bike is ideal, but not an option ATM.

correct me if im wrong but you will still need to take a CBT in order to ride anything legally, inc 50cc vespa's lol

edit: just found this...

"You will need to complete CBT if:
  • you want to ride a moped (a moped has an engine not over 50 cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) which is approximately 31 miles per hour)
  • you want to ride a motorcycle
If you obtained your car licence before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a moped."
