Should be bomb proof mate, i had a 96 mk3 golf(16v) and that had 144k on the clock but went really well, only problem i had was 1st 2nd and reverse gears, was a right pain in the arse sometimes, probably worn linkage or something but decided to sell for something different.
I dont think you would go far wrong if you checked all the usual things though

Yes its overpriced.

Engines make a great noise, don't think they are too overstressed and can be tuned to quite a decent level.

Watch for leaking door seals, exploding oil pumps (maybe just my mates car that one!).

Still looks like an African's minicab though. Me, I'd want it cheaper and I'd raise it and put decent wheels on it.

Maybe a tad too dear.

Engines are AWESOME. Standard bottom ends good for 600bhp.

There was a Mk3 Golf VR6 at the rolling road yesterday, standard engine with a GT3076 on it, big injectors and a chip, yes a chip, standard managment!!!!!

Made 430bhp and 450lb/ft and the noise it made was just immense!

phwoarr that sounds fucking mint

ta for the tips too, i'd really want a jetta over a golf, i just prefer cars with proper boots for some reason. i had a feeling that was overpriced too imho, thanks for the tips, i'll leave that one alone but keepa lookout. ihad a mk3 cl as a workrunabout a few years ago and it never skipped a beat, but tat was low mileage and not tuned.

Should be about the 2k mark I think.

These handle better than golfs btw. I've had one these but ut was a Gti 16v.

Could be a good sleeper though.

There are quite a few vw forums that could help you matey. i.e www.clubgti.com
