My sis and her chap have moved in to a place, they have a phone line but no internet.
They have a laptop with wireless so whats the best/ cheapest way for them to get on the net?
She tried one of those dongles but said its shit and didnt even work? i dont know much about this as ive been using a router/ adsl for years

 

Tried what dongle thing? If they don't have an incoming internet signal, where do you/they expect to pick up an internet signal from?

They need to sign up to an ISP, like BT, Virgin, Tiscali etc, and plug a modem/router into the phone line to get internet - exactly the same way you do....

 

Yeah i know they need an isp thrush, but what are these usb dongles? i thought there meant to act as a modem? like i said ive no idea as ive never had to look into it, so thought it would be easier to ask someone whos in the same situation

think they are around Ł20 per month to get connected with the dongle, not sure how much it costs for pay as you go.

 

If you click on 'view wireless networks' you can see if there's any unsecured networks available and just connect to them for free.

 

shes probably already done that, plus it tends to only work if one is VERY near by.

So basically if she doesnt want to be banging her head against a brick wall she would be better off having a proper connection with a router

 

Stands to reason - if you want internet access - get an internet connection in the house
