EVO Has the Vanos System (Variable Camshafts) and puts out more power.

Other than that, not much difference except the Evo will be a later model.

Evo is more powerful and has better torque, but make sure the Vanos System is ok. Listen for tappety sound when starting from cold.

Cost's alot to repair

M3 = 3.0 litre 24 valve, 286bhp, 5 speed box and VANOS on one side only.

M3 Evo = 3.2 litre 24 valve, 321bhp, 6 speed box and VANOS on both inlet AND exhaust, of which always seems to have probs.

EVOs are fucking quality cars, ive enver been a fan of hardly anything really, but my mates got a Silver M3EVO with black leather and its SUCH a awesome all round car.

Just needs more power for me, fast as fuck anyhow, but everything feels slow after stripped out 400bhp 3dr, so id want some even more, dont think a turbo would suit it, big boost supercharger conversion would be tho

Id get an E36 M3EVO over a pretty std Esc Cossie for 12k any day, and been in both a lot (but gotta note ive never liked the look of EscCossies, dont like 4wd, and love RWD, the poshness, and the sound, of M3EVOs)

Id not be able to leave the M3 alone tho, its blower time

Good point! Id want one with all the extras, the extras are VERY nice, thats what makes it such a cool car, all the options jus give it that extra that makes it stand out as a cool car for me

these are only available in the coupe - the conv had "normal" recaro style seats.

Vanos unit is around a 1k to repair or replace.

A stg3 cossie will piss all over a M3 Evo all day long - as i raced my cousin in his M3 when my cossie was stg3 and he was fookin gutted

BMW mechanic here! Driven them all,the conver is v.dissapointing, shakes over bumps and not major fast the coupe is 10 times better.
Even the E46 shakes over a rough road but not quite as bad- its the motor that leaves the impression though!

The 3.0 has a better power delivery and gear change although only a 5spd than the Evo.The 3.0 also has a less stressed engine which hardly ever seems to go wrong in any way.

The Evo has it all on paper though over the 3.0:
Alloy doors,revised suspension caster+ cambor,quicker steering,floating disc brakes,and the rest.

The coupes drive so much better, try both

Thats another good point, tho the convirtible is veeery cool looking, the Coupe is a shitload better as a car.

Regarding supercharger kits, TDI do one (its pretty comprehensive but keeps std engine, for 7500quid, 385bhp.

I reckon a really good tuner could sort u a 1 off conversion for far less tho, TDI are expensive.

They no performance bargain to mod, but they a really really nice all round car.
