how do you work out what tax you should be paying?
ie what percentage per pound?

take about a 1/4 of ur wages and that should be a good guess for tax and natinal insurance

it means you get £6301 per year TAX FREE...you will get taxed on the rest of your wages minus this amount

..yeh but it doesn't work like that..u dont start in April and pay nothing untill 6k....u still pay every week (unless it's ur first job or been out of work)

All it means is you take the 6k off your total earnings for the year and thats what you get taxed on.

I normally deduct 30% from my gross salary per month and this usually allows for tax, NI and pension contributions

Multiply your "On top" income by "0.73" which should give you a rough idea of what you should take home
