Default engine management

my mates ford fiesta running bad ,engine management light comin on .took it into ford garage said it was a coil down, would be £500, today said it,s engine management box knackered,as well they want £1100. do you think he could be getting ripped off, ?,do you think it could just be the coil knackered.any ideas?.

The mere fact that they can't tell a duff coil from a duff ecu, tells me I would go elsewhere, apart from the totally unrealistic prices.

i would ask them for a detailed report on what diagnostics theyve done and what results they have got to diagnose this problem.

if they are unwilling or unable to provide this, tell them to fuck off.

it's quite possible that it's all above board, but more likely the apprentice is just replacing bits that MIGHT be wrong with it after plugging it into his machine and it telling them A FAULT EXISTS

what year is the car as the later ones blow the ecu if the coil pack dies had 2 of them at work do it

Fiesta mk6's are prone to coilpack problems, if it feels like the car is producing half power then it will more than likley be this.

How many miles has the car got? as they can go as little as 20k, most last 60-65k. We had to change ours last month for the cost of 38quid.

if the ecu is fubbered then it will come up on the dash EAC FAIL (i think thats the code)

yeah what he said.the coil dies and spikes the ecu.normally though its just the coil that dies but can kill ecu aswell

Electronic Acceleration Control fail warning normally means throttle body is fooked

nah thats cool dude didnt mean to sound jumpy.

thats alot of money for a coil pack considering i think its about £75ish prob way out lol.either dear coil or the diagnostic hourly rate is excessively high lol.

Hi Thanks for all the replys , he is havin it done ,included in the 1st 500 was the £88 for diagnostic check, he is paying £1100 for the lot back on the rd next week ,this is at a ford garage, I thought it would be up and running within a day,mmmmm!!!!!. thanks again it is an 03 with only about 20000 miles on.
