r5's run on carbs, so in theory are much easier to tune....

Only if you understand the science with carbs and can re-drill your own jets and the like.
Carb based stuff would be much easier to fix though. Unbolt one, bolt on another.

Personally I'd buy an RST. GT5s are great but everytime I've been in one I've been reminded of how short and fragile life really is.
I'd hate to stack one, there'd be nothing left.

R5 GTT are fun but just shit to drive all the time. Its only a blown Volvo 340 motor too.

Having drove both cars Id go RST every time.

Renault 5 - head gasket

Theyve got stupid bleed nipples everywhere too which cause problems

DEfinitely the s2, although i wouldnt say either were a particularly reliable car.

i owned 3

2 run 14psi on std engines (never had a single issue with either)

3rd i had run 25psi (drag form) 20 daily drive, good spec head and turbo

never had a single issue with any of my reno 5's

i'd get one over a RS turbo,

although i loved my rsturbo, it was no way as quick as the R5

will add the RS turbo, has comfort, R5 turbo is just rapid

Had a couple of r5's and a couple of rs turbo's like others have said there the r5 is a 1/4 mile car but i used to hate motorways, rs turbo are more sturdy.if the cooling system is ok on the 5 it (should) last. Europarts did a fast twin engined r5 0-60 in 2.91

Bit stupid asking on a Ford forum really. Esp when it sounds like the "experiences" were from cars that were crocks of shite that wasnt running right.

Running right and R5 Turbos are better in pretty much every way IMO. Apart from the way of claiming your cars faster than it is, then being really dissapointing at Brunters/Santapod when timed

Only problems you get on GTTs are like all cars, if they det from incorrect fueling or your a retard and dont know how to look after a performance car/engine.
A modified one isnt something you should own unless you can spot when somethings wrong (rather than just driving it into the ground), and certainly not summat you should give to a non-specialist to play with.

eh?

It would be WAY more accurate to say its just a de-tuned Group B rally engine

Way more heritage than a fucking CVH, not that it counts for shit.

i was gonna say head gasket too but most of you have beat me. Its easier to get the gearboxes out of the S2s cause the R5s have a daft sub frame that you have to drop down to remove the gearbox.

Head gasket blows from det, which happens as your fuelling is wrong. Thats your or your tuners fault, not the car.
Can be changed in an hour tho.

I'd rather have the bigger brother, a Reno 11 turbo.
Escort-sized so you've got your comfort.

Any car is only as good as its maintenance.

Iv had 7 renault 5 turbo's in my time and up untill my corsa they where all the best car's iv ownd, the myth about them having shit Hg's is just folk who have never ownd or if they have they have never looked after the engine, if you look after the engine it will look after you

And if anything if the Hg goes then no problem if you know what your doing u can have it sorted in less then an hour, iv even read i thread on the rtoc about some guy who just pulled out the push rods and undid the head bolts, got his friend to stand on the wings and pulled the head up with everything still attached and slid in a new gasket

Only thing is they are made of the thinest metal on the planet, i whent to crail once and some fat burd propt herself up agenst my pals one and put a big dent in the door, dont crash one also lol

You was tuning them wrong then.

Mine didnt have peak power till 6750rpm and power didnt drop off after either, would pull clean off the clock no bother.

Thats like leaving a T25 on a small turbo Esc Cossie and saying they have no top end.

ive had quite a bit of experience with standard r5s in my youth most ive seen was 11 psi and a jet and that car was no match for a fiat uno turbo running a chip and 9 psi. ive been in about 10 all told and they all had shit top end. i sat side by side with a r5 in my old uno at 100 and both floored it and i pulled away from the r5.
a proper set up rs turbo with chip, mongoose and 16 psi that was a fast car used to piss away from my old standard renault 21 turbo.

im sure a 130bhp s2 isnt exactly hitting warp speed top end tho is it

im with stav on this, i was really into the r5 scene and the people who say they are wank dont really understand the car......its the same type of people who would prob say all corsa/novas are crap.......wheres rs2.7 when u need him

The engines and gearboxes are one of the strongest around, its just theres only so much det any engine can take.

can you think of any other fwd hot hatch that can run 12s on standard internals?

or that can be launched at 6krpm on slicks for 20 times in a row on a standard gearbox.

i know i cant, so before you make a decision on the head gaskets are crap, think why they go, not enough fueling!

i ran 28psi of boost on a gt28rs on a standard bottom end and standard gasket, no ignition mods, its all a case of having enough fuel, which takes 30secs, 1.4mm drill bit through the jet and your laughing

ROFL

So youve had fuck all experience then

Even the stg1 sorta spec on a GTT ran 16psi

Thats like me saying Cossies are shit and would get killed by a Scooby because my experience of a Cossie was running 10psi and the Scooby was running 1.2bar

in my experience a standard rs turbo 100 to 130 is much quicker than a r5, all the r5s ive been in have struggled to do 120

standard ones are pretty irrelivant, and TBH my experiences of stock RSTs and R5GTTs were that they both had no top end.

and your modified experiences are next to nothing, as you/i say above in post 28...

Old 5 was a low comp engine with some K-tec bits on it running 18psi, it flew, handled great too - was driven to the 'ring, then spa as well as trashed around the circuits and other track days and never missed a beat - well the only thing that broke was fuel pump relay. Did feel a bit like a bean tin, but was defo better than my S2 (our Uno turbo was slower, can't remember its spec, 21 turbo was rapid as standard, certainly not put you in the back of you seat like the 5 though)

Are there any standard cars about anymore?

exactly, theres different levels of r5s just like theres different levels of rst

yes the rst has 200cc more but on bhp/litre the r5 is much better and more importantly bhp/ton

you said yourself, your experiences of a modded one was 11psi, about 3psi up on standard, and 5psi LESS than what they should run even for a stage one setup (ie just a simple boost upgrade).
how can you comment how good they are compared to RSTs when tuning them when thats all your experience of them?

like said, thats like me saying cossies are crap as my only experience of them was a standard one running 11psi and a lightly tuned R5GTT rinsed it.

thats not the case though i said standard rst and standard r5 and rst was faster yet you just dismiss and claim i have no experience ? id genuinely like to see a standard r5 thats faster than a rst as in my experience they are not.
