I want one of these badly!

Quite worried about the vanos issues though? Havn't looked fully into it though.

Can someone sum it up for me briefly?

Ditto. Internet bollox. Expensive to replace IF it fails, but it very rarely does. Its the usual bollox spouted by people who cant afford to buy one, so they drag up some bollox to explain why they havent bought one. The reason is never that they cant afford it, just that they think it will break if they could. People love to be negative sadly.

My BMW dealers have never had to replace any either. The M5 is as reliable as any other German built Ł65000 car. Bear in mind at time of launch you could buy HOUSES in this price bracket, so unreliability wasnt an option.

Secondly, how many articles have you seen about the ring taxi breaking down? Now those cars get more abuse than any M5 you or I will be buying...

I did think it was a bit stange for a Ł65000 car to have a serious flaw like that...but I can see it having been exaggerated.

What kind of price am I looking at for a decent one? and what would the average mileage be at that price?

spot on stu, one thing bmw wont tell people is that if youre vanos does become inoperative it can more often than not be serviced/overhauled/repaired in situ, majority of vanos issues ive heard of were cured with new solenoid o rings in the front housing.

Thanks, i'd prefer cup holders as the TrafficMaster is a subscription service which i wouldn't use, so i might invest in a pair

Interior shots are a bit grubby as i hadn't vac'd it...but it's minty mint inside

How much power did your Evo have mate? Be interested to see what linear raw power feels like and also whether the M5 is a match for your Evo. But definitely wanting your opinion on power delivery and what it feels like since for my next car don't know whether to go high power N/A or turbo.

The evo was about 360bhp and less weight+ short ratio box, so 0-100mph was awesome, if it's the thrill of acceleration you want then a well specced turbo car is hard to beat.

the M5 is quite lardy though so initial acceleration isn't breathtaking, but once rolling it puts on speed at an amzing rate for such a big car, the limiter can be hit in a relatively short distance.

The main benefit is that it's fast AND comfy/luxurious, which edges it for me..the EVO was awesome though around corners etc.

You can get an M5 now for Evo 6 money. Don't know how decent they would be though but browsing pistonheads you can get very nice MINT low mile M5s for sort of Evo 8 money although I wouldn't be looking that high up. Looking more or less around Evo 6ish money.

I bet though once around 5000rpm where double VANOS comes in that thing PROPERLY goes!!! Must sound a bit tasty as well. Heard an M5 V8 before and even just pottering around they give the most awesome growl!

It does make a lovely noise

Ł11k upwards will get you a great car and i'm sure some of the slightly cheaper ones will be fine too.

Only thing to be wary of is to check that the car you look at doesn't have some big bills on the way, for instance a set of tyres or a clutch, or even new brakes...these parts alone could sting the wallet a bit!

Maybe all of this interest from people will push the values UP?

Very good advice The brakes and tyres could easily set you back Ł2k.
How do i know? I replaced the lot as a precaution prior to going to the ring this year. That said, tyre and brake wear is excellent IMO.

tyres alone cost me just over a grand! ouch!
Mind you - i do drive it sideways everywhere!

How much do you think for a clutch change Stu? Mine is about to go Im pretty sure....doesnt seem to like being heated up in spirited runs between short runs of roundabouts

my clutch kit cost me 230 quid, no labour as i did it myself,if paying a garage expect to be charged up to 300 quid in labour alone(obviously not @ the main dealer, double that and then some probly!), just changed tyres a couple of days ago from conti sport contact2s to pirelli p zero rosso,s front 2 cost me 180 quid fitted, rear two 250 quid fitted, due to a good pal with superb contacts in the tyre game.

Far from crazy whe you look at the price difference, and they drive better too, the new engine is quite lethargic at the bottom end compared to the old one. Its a regular bone of contention when owners upgrade, that said, i bet its the ONLY one... LOL

For the price difference it really is a no brainer but I think it would be ridiculous to call the V10 in the M5 gutless and the toys/looks/comfort it offers. At the moment, price difference alone decides it for me but hopefully when I'm in a position to look at an M5 (good few years yet ) the prices will be more affordable!

I agree, ive driven quite a few, thats why i called them lethargic compared to the E39 V8 version.
