parents have just got a new Philips HD LCD today with built in freeview.

They have a dvd recorder aswell but am i right in thinking they can only record what their watching?

If the DVD recorder has a built in Freeview tuner, then they can record say, BBC1 on that, and watch say, ITV2 on the TV, using the TV's built in FV tuner....

one more thing, since the "switch over" hasnt happened yet could they not record from digital, and then flick onto normal tv? or vice versa, or would that still not work because its still only one tuner isnt it?

I'd guess the telly will have both an analogue tuner and a digital tuner built in.

Most of them seem to be able to output the freeview signal to the DVD through the SCART cable, so they could record (say) Film 4 while they watch (say) BBC2 on an analogue channel.

The DVD recorder will be taking it's feed from the SCART output of the TV, so regardless of using analogue or digital tuner, it will only record what is on the screen at that time. So if you are watching BBC3 then it will record BBC3. If you are watching ITV on analogue, then it will record ITV on analogue. If you are watching a DVD, then it will record the DVD (tho copy protection might intervene and screw up the picture)

Thats a twin tuner PVR, will let you record two channels at the same time, but you can't record two channels and watch a third, live, channel. You'd need three tuners, like the Virgin Media V+ box for that......
