Worth the hype?
i know about the MMS thing, not really fussed on that, as you can send picture messages by email so thats fine.
More concerned about the costs, i.e if you use the GPS maps or internet, i.e if not in a hot spot.
Does it end up costing a shitload?
Anyone work for O2 and can do me a deal?

phil yeah the contract says free unlimited internet and email, but i was under the impression that was only whilst in there hot spots and not whilst roaming, can anyone clear this up?
kelv, i wouldnt use it abroad for anything other than calling, as anything abroad is exspensive.

I would hope the connectivity issues would be the biggest concern for most users.

They have already been sued a couple of times, and its been proven that the phone is actually below 3G standards
http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2...ch-iphone.html
Get a blackberry imho, at least it can perform to its stated specification

yeah just found that out cheers phil, its the contract tarriff blurb that threw me as it said roaming data is not included, but found out that that is a generic tarriff blurb they put on and not relevant to the iphone.
cabbie, im not too fussed about the speed to be honest, as thats what i have a home mac for, its the ease of use, as well as being a an ipod.

all data is free all the time.
i'd advise checking out the apple forum on the iphone to get he jist of what the problems are, as there are many. I do still love mine but i'm losing faith in apple to get them sorted without a product recall...

Worth the hype?
But then nothing ever is. Besides, its an Apple product - you're only buying it because you think its cool.
Its a shame "Style over substance" doesn't sound as catchy as 'Think Different'

Simple solution? Don't use the data connection when abroad, or phone the operator (o2) and get a roaming package so it costs less.
As for the iPhone being worth the hype? Depends what you want to use it for. If you spend a lot of the time on the internet, emailing, going on websites, using maps, etc etc - then yes, you will benefit from it. If you rarely use mobile internet, email etc, then no, you probably won't.
As a "phone" (ie, calls & texts) it's nothing special at all. In fact it's pretty mediocre, and Nokia's are typically better in that capacity - as you already said, you know about not being able to do MMS/picture messaging (even tho you actually can, it's just not a native Apple app, rather a third party app - like so many other apps for it - about 95% are third party)
The whole point of the iPhone is it's tag line : "The internet - in your pocket" Thats what it's for - the internet. It's a device geared to access the web and email in the best format. In that capacity it beats nearly ever other device out there (must admit, the Blackberry Bold looks good, not seen it in action yet tho). It's mobile version of OS X is just a joy to use.
But, there are limitations and things missing from it. From my point of view, I'd like to see the following come out for it;
- Native MMS support - at the very least picture messaging
- Copy N Paste support within applications
- Disk mode enabled (so you can carry docs, etc without having to access them OTA)
- More customiseable(sp) - ringtones, message alert tones, etc
- If a new hardware revision comes out, small LED indicators for new message (text/email), new voice message, missed call etc would be nice

Its like anything new, let everyone else 'finance' the development for a year or two then buy one when its a mature product.
You only need look at all the gadget magpies who bought the first revision to realise the futility of rushing out and buying something based on hype.

cheers thrush, i think im pretty sure im going to get one, althought the samsung omnia i900 looks pretty good as my mate bought one today and i had a quick go on it a minute ago, not quite the same slickness of the iphone but offers a few more things than the iphone, but seems to lack in other departments.
At the end of the day i will use the net on the move as its handy for my work, and i also need a music device, i.e iphone, so ticks both those boxes, and at the end of the day is only a phone and not expensive so i can get something different on ebay if i wanted something different a few months down the line.
Anyone get deals on them? or is it o2 and carphone only?
I.e anyone offer me a slightly better contract or slightly cheaper handset cost?

Everytime Thrush makes a post about the I-phone I feel like I'm 'on the dark side of' a photcopier. If these cunts didn't reel all the sheep in from all those adverts and what USA says then they should pay this guy a %.

I've always had the lastest phones from Nokia( so well used to constant shutting down and software failures) BUT the Fuckin N95 put an end to that, the worlds most unreliable mobile phone in history i believe!!
I took the plung with i iphone 3g as i wanted a Bose docking station and ipod anyway!
For internet, Video, music, video podcasts/podcasts, instant messaging, etc its unbeatable
The internet is great, u can access almost all sites, full paypal, online banking and even you porn/you tube etc, i've done over 250mb since i've had the phone
Full google earth with direction/search nearby
More 3rd party apps than u can shake a stick at, ie Facebook, photobucket both with instant upload, perfomance meters similar to GTECH etc
The forwarding txt option was a pain, but if u rewrite 1 funny txt then add recipients you can send to as many as you want then it saves it in your inbox, so u don't have to re add names u just have to rewrite the txt's then forward to all your mates in 1 go!
As for the ring tones, download
http://www.iringer.net/
Hit simple installer at the bottom af the page
U can then take any song from your computer, select your favorite 30 seconds from that song and save directly to your itunes ring tone directory!
A Must for it tho is a Silicon skin and screen protector, got the pair from UK on Ebay for about 7 quid!
Make sure u get the 16gig tho, you'll fill it surprisingly quicky! lol

I love my iphone, ok not as flexible as my N95 but what i want the iphone for its great.
MMS is something that a company called swirlyspace or something like that is sorting out right now as an application, but im also assured by o2 that apple are doing something about it aswell.
Ring tones- i have a bit of freeware that can be sent on to someone if they want it?
It makes a ringtone for you, then drops it in to itunes so you can sync and the ringtone will be found in iphone/general settings/sounds/ringtones.
steve.

As for "decent rich content" - thats the whole point of the browser - it's the same browser as Safari for Mac or Windows! The whole point is it displays all the same stuff you'd get on your computer, unless you choose to use Google Mobile or Facebook for iPhone, both of which are optimised for viewing on a PDA or handheld!
Whichever way you cut it, it's still far richer in content and viewing capabilities than trying to get the internet on a fucking N95 Or even on Opera Mini on the BLackberry's and the like..... Fuck me, using a Nokia to view the web is like viewing WAP in the old days
As for who's a cunt getting reeled in, have you used the phone? IE< properly used it, not just played with it for 5 mins in a shop? Cos I have, so I ain't getting reeled in at all. I based my opinions and findings on actual useage, and thus an educated opinion. I would lay money on the fact you're just another one that wants to be on the bandwagon of the "it's cool to bash apple", and can't base anything you say on expirience as you haven't had one!
What are all these adverts? I've seen two? How many do Nokia have?.
And what does the USA have to do with it? I can only presume it's because Apple is an American company, but then so is virtually everything you use (either that or Japanese), including Microsoft, so I fail to see the relevancy of the quip?

would def reccommend it!
had the first gen since it was released pretty much and think it's awesome.
ok there's a few things ( as said mms, c+p, etc ) that would improve it but still its an awesome all round phone. Now they've allowed 3rd party apps there's thousands of different applications you can download ( some free, some cost )
internet browsing is brill too, as apple say you get the internet whereever you are - would be lost without it now
persuaded my dad to get an iphone and he loves it now, works well with his emails, ok probably not as good as a blackberry but that's not really your average phone. He's had a p900, p990 and p1i and much prefers the iphone.

Interesting isn't it, that Skeg keeps coming onto iPhone threads, and calling me out for being a "sheep" because I like the iPhone, then when I ask him if his negative comments towards it are based on any actual expirience of using it, he never seems tos reply? Thats twice now, once in this thread and once in another.....
Skeg, how about you justify your opinions, based on educated expirience, not just hearsay and guessing - before you choose to make unfounded conclusions because you think it's cool to be in the "lets bash Apple and brand anyone that expresses an interest or like of thier products a sheep" brigade

Be lucky! Unless you are going to use it with an o2 simcard, a UK model won't work for you. Nor will a US. Or one from virtually any other country!
The only ones that work with any sim/network are from either Hong kong, Italy, and Greece (and they aren't sold in greece yet) Reasons for this is these are the ONLY places Apple have allowed network unlocked iPhones to be sold. But getting one off-line is another matter altogether! I *think* you can get em from Italy, but they aren't cheap - 500euro's for the 8gb, more for the 16gb!
I've researched it somewhat as I really want one, but don't want to go with o2, am tied into a T-Mobile contract for another 16mths, and don't want to change my number.....

It's only the 3G iphones that don't have a software unlock as of yet. Although there is a hardware unlock.
As for a cheap iPhone you can probably get a secondhand 2G 8GB from America for £170.

All jailbreaking does is allows you to install third party apps and programmes, it doesn't unlock the phone to be used on a different carrier network.
The old iPhones, on 1.1.4 firmware could be UNLOCKED to use on any network, but since firmware 2.0.x came out, there is still no way of unlocking an iphone on this firmware for any network. It cannot be done.... yet....

What aload of crap that was. You can software unlock them for any contract for free!

As for getting a 2G - whats the point of that? I'm better off with my Nokia! You can't always get a wifi connection, and certainly not a constant one for push email and the like, so that makes the iPhone 2G about as good for internet and email use as an iPod touch - which, before anyone jumps in, is what I said from the start.... The ONLY bonus to a 2G model is they can be reverted to 1.1.4 firmware so you can software unlock it, 3G models cannot go back in firmware past 2.0, hence no unlock....

Ask them what firmware revision these phones have and find out if it is SOFTWARE unlocking, or if they are using a SIM hijacker. SIM hijackers are little bits of circuitry that fool the iphone into thinking it has a valid network sim in it. Problem is, they don't always work, many don't allow a 3G data connection, and they are VERY tempramental. Google REBELSIM or TURBOSIM

Thought they would've managed it by now!
i know you say there's no point getting a 2g, i know you can't really compare 3g to a edge or gprs but apart from that and gps ( which isn't that great! ) there isn't any difference
Not sure what it's like around you, but we don't get great 3g signal here so there is no real difference between the 2 and 3g phones
