Default Zetec Engine poor idle - Help needed please

Mate has a 1.6 zetec focus. It has a lumpy idle and when you get to a junction it just stalls.

what do you think the reason could be for this? He thought it was the air flow meter but he tried another one and it didnt cure it. Im not really clued up on this engine so dont know what to suggest to him.

Any help would be greatfully received

thanks

idle control valve, or throttle position sensor.

These engines are known for funky revs sometimes, on my old escort gti it was constantly reving over 1k even when warm and when reved to change gear when you put your foot on the clutch the revs wouldnt drop.
Changed the throttle position sensor and it never happened again

im not to sure about the focus zetec engine but i know the escort zetecs and the fiesta zetecs have idle speed control valves which sometimes need cleaning out with brake cleaner. Then use some wd40 to lube it back up.

anyone got a diagram or pic of what im looking for?

I did think it might be the IRV but thought it would be on the airbox like on the old efi engines so presumed it didnt have one.

There is on a lot of zetec engines a "T" piece that runs under the inlet for the pcv system, these split and let in air weakening the mixture and causing all sorts of grief.

ok Cleaned this tonight but still no change as such. The plunger thing inside we made sure was moving and flushed it out with carb cleaner then drove it for a good 5mins to make sure it was all through ok but still seems to be the same.

Suppose i should have checked that the 2 'o' ring seals werent perished.

Any other sugestions peeps?

When you swap the bits, leave the battery off a couple of hours too.
