Default Exporting a car to Germany?

Hey there,

I'm planning on buying a car in the UK and bringing it to Germany. Is there anything special to do, like notifying DVLA, etc.?

Also, do I have to be the registered owner of a car in order to get it exported? Or is it possible that the previous UK owner does all that?

Another thing is insurance? I work in car trade here in Germany and people who come here to buy a car can buy a special temporary number plate including insurance? Is there anything similar in the UK?

Any help will be much appreciated!

hi peter, i've done this before and it's very easy (and done it the other way around).

just leave the registration plates on, the system is completely different to germany. there is such a thing called 'trade plates', but you will not be able to get them as you do not have a registered place of business here, and anyway they do not cover travel outside of the UK.

for insurance purposes, your insurer should just insure it against the VIN

the V5 document has a section to fill in to tell the dvla that it has been exported. the previous keeper can do that, but make sure you get a receipt for buying it. as you probably know, you can download one in both english and german from ADAC.

any other questions, do not hesitate to ask

Hi Nick,

thanks for the advice!

Do I need the export receipt from the DVLA, too?

Hallo;

No, i dont believe you do. The registered keeper of the car will send the purple section (V5C/4) of the V5 registration document "notification of permanent export" to the DVLA

I'm having a cossie brought over on Friday, but not sure if I will keep it registered in Germany (better for parking and speed cameras ) or officially import it into UK

Be aware that you can only keep a foreign-registered car on the road here legally for a maximum of 12 months, and cars from some places, including Europe, only get 6 months in any 12 month period. It's up to the owner to prove how long it has been here.

I could only drive my cavalier here for 1 month then it had to go back to UK.

The German TUV would not allow the,

Brakes, (AP)
Wheels (MO's)
Tyres (not written in V5, not original type)
engine, (slightly modified)
lights, must buy new ones.
exhaust. ( SS special, 1 box, no Cat)

I cannot verify the details, but the local garage just laughed when I suggested exporting. Thet said it would fail any inspection.

a standard car will have a better chance.

I know all the TÜV problems... But I'm indeed looking at std cars.

You gonna be at Mickhausen again in October, Kenny?

Hi Peter

was hoping to get to St Agatha and Mickhausen but my wife, Shirley, is still ill. (cancer)
The Chemo therapy is not finished yet and so I will stay at home and look after her, probably getting better at end November.

Next year, might have a better chance against the Lancia integrale and Merc 190's).

(new engine is raedy now, 462ps, 590Nm, should go well next year)

There are quite some points you have to take into consideration when you want to export a UK car to Germany. First, the car has to meet German standards and regulations, otherwise it won't pass the TUV test. Then getting a cheap car insurance in Germany is not the easiest thing with a foreign car. Most insurance companies set high fees for foreign cars because repair (spare parts) could be problematic. So it's important to check all these things first before exporting a car to Germany.
