the Large Hadron Collider...tested!!!
Initial particle beam injections were successfully carried out between 8-11th August 2008,the first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for september 10 and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on october 21 2008.
The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °
well everyone.. not long to go then untll a series of small black holes are created here on earth near geneva, then after having a think they will get hungry, team up and consume the earth.. we are all doomed.. oh dear.

Very interesting stuff.
Was this the one that the loonies thought would cunsume the world?
The old urban myth about scientists creating a particle accelerator that nobody dare turn on?

Lol if something does go wrong you'd never know anyway, the closer you get to the singularity the slower time passes, you'll just dissapear in the blink of an eye as will I and everyone else!!
I don't really want it to go forward but I hope everything goes ok!!

CERN did an open day a little while back in Geneva where you could see the LHC and a few other projects, presentations etc, looked awesome on the web pages they did about it, if I'd have found out about it sooner I think I'd have gone, it's anticipated to be the only time the LHC will ever be open to the public .
They reckon the possibility of a sustained black hole is very remote, but if it does happen, least you lot won't be here to give them the big "We told you so"

i find it mad that they dont really see the results of what they are doing, buy see the reaction from the resulting collision and piece it all together!
some brainy people working there

read alot about this! really interested.
for anyone who doesnt know what they are doing, they are firing particles at eachother at near the speeed of light in order to see what happened in the first few nano seconds of the "Big Bang". as said above they dont know fully what will happen, but can take an educated guess, unfortunately a black hole is also one of the other alternatives...

I work with someone who used to work there.
Apparently they showed a screen-shot of some software he'd written on the news. He was dead chuffed about it.
As I understand it, any black holes that could be potentially formed will collapse in on themselves instantaneously anyway so theres no risk whatsoever. (Google 'Hawking Radiation' for the theory)
As with all science though, the proof is in the testing. The fact they've managed to contain the beam is a big achievement. You wouldnt be too popular with the cleaners if it punched a hole in the side and blew one of them big magnets to smithereens.

Did Someone Mention TUV

I dont understand a single thing anyone has really written here. But it does sound interesting. These particles they are firing towards each other at near the speed of light? They are incredibly small yes so if they create a black hole, how big is that likley to be?
Is there any links as to where i can read up on this? Be a nerd for a day
