RAC are clearly NOT Rotary engine experts...

I *think* what Ginge is trying to say is that dont assume just because someone works for the RAC (or just a mechanic in an average garage) knows everything about everything, I bet the RAC guy looks at a thousands of shopping cars every week, so in his experience perhaps a compression issue is usally a gasket problem.
I for one wouldn't be surprised if RAC training spends 0% of its time genning up on Wankels.

The fact they, and beetle engines, are perfecty good engines, some of the best in their age/class?

The only thing I will say for them is they're rugged, and theres none of the hassle associated with water cooling.
Still, engineering moves on as Porsce and Subaru have obviously proven. Still seems an odd choice of format in the first place though..

The beetle engine may have been good in the 30s but by the time they were sold en-masse over here they were already out-classed in every aspect by our own british A series.

And the engine is WAY more tuneable than the A-series.
Reason I expect Subaru do it is weight distribution as much as anything.

the engines lower weight is one of the MANY things with em, they are a nice engine design and not sure why more people dont use em,,, but then again dont know why the wankels aint used more as apart from the fuel consumption/oil burning issue its a stronger engine
and chip im FAR from arogant about anything at all, infact i was commenting on HOW the mistake was made and could see how it could have been done, yes its school boy to someone who knows everything about that car,,,, but remember the AA/RAC need to look at any vehicle and diagnose the issue why it cant be fixed and look at a few cars a day ALSO need to assess it as quick as possible,,,, if,,,, and we dont know but IF the compression was down,,, its safe to say he aint gonna solve it so he reports it as quick as poss,,, making a simple mistake but hes also gotta make a general guess anyway
the breakdown chaps are VERY good imo most times and could see how that was made
steves post was more of a " look how think they are, they dont know shite about wankels" when it could have just been the way he looked at it
cambelt,, well thats just guess work i supose,,,,, maybe its cause it was missing he assumed it snapped pmsl

I aint getting into an argument about beetle engines ffs.
Having driven standard 1300 beetles and any number of 'A' engined cars I can say the A engined cars easily outperformed them and provided a smoother more civilised ride too.
I've seen some examples but I'd be interested if you have any to share?
I doubt that.

Have you SEEN what people have achieved with the beetle engine power wise!

lower centre of gravity based on where the engine sits on a impreza is one of the reasons and also can sit futher back as the engine is shorter length ways but wider

The A series is greatly limited in tuning potential when you start going forced induction and comparing to modern engines, but was ok in its day.
Had a few decent ones myself, so im not again them, but ultimately they ARE more limited than the beetle engine IMHO
One of my old ones from fucking ages ago, might interest you if you are into the A series, if not you can just laugh at how much weight ive put on in the last 10 years or something, lol:

so youre comparing standard engines? in completely different cars? and you bring up ride quality? wtf! you start tuning an a series and first the gearset spits it dummy, shortly followed by the crank, and 100bhp/litre is almost uheard of!
you doubt it why? What seriously makes you think the a series is better than the beetle lump?

My hairstyle at the time was where the nickname chip came from, but you cant see it in those pics.
I used to have the front bit flicked up with a wax on it, and it looked a bit shiney, like it had chip-fat on it, and thats where the nickname started from!
you woudlnt guess that now of course, everyone always assumes its to do with the fact I chip cars or computer programming etc, or possibly just that I eat too many chips

The time that picture was taken though, that was the start of the decline for me, as it was a year or two after I stopped doing lots of martial arts, which was the only exercise I ever really got, lol
Another 2 years before that picture was taken I was 11 stone exactly and had a six pack and pecs. I never pictured myself a decade later as a bald fat cunt, shows how these things can sneak up on you
