I been driving my mates M plate STI thing all day today and although it drives well, its just not quick and I was disappointed with handling too. Just loved to understeer everywhere. My old Belmont feels better on the bends

Re-mapping the 2.5 opens them right up, and I reckon that the Prodrive Performance Pack will also prove quite popular too when they release it.. but the new style STi is a bit softer than the older models, I wasn't a massive fan of them, however it is MILES better than the new WRX model which is absolutely flat, rolly polly to drive and looks even worse than the STi.

Forgot to say, if you want an edgy drive in an Impreza... have a good drive of a Classic Shape 2dr Type-R or 4dr Type-RA. They are extremely focused cars and behave more like RWD than 4WD do.
Understeer is a standard feature on Imprezas though, its easy to change, couple of ARB's and a decent geometry set-up are all it needs to dial out most of it.
Cheers,
Grant

I actually like the look of the new STi, but then i like the look of Saph's so doesnt say much really.
Scoobies and Evo's are just on another level and 20 years down the line from our Cosworths. They are also aimed at a wider market who dont want there head being snapped off every time it come on boost. Handling they are designed to be easy to drive with predictable handling [ie understeer when pushed hard].
It has been mentioned so many times its pointless comparing the two. You wouldnt compare a 20 year old computer with one now would you? Still people try and compare a 20 year old Cosworth to a 2 week old Scooby or Evo.

Agree mate, i miss my Version 6 V-LIMITED RA i had, man that thing was manic, only running around 290-300bhp after i had it mapped, but fook me to 100mph it was balistic, i think everyone should drive one of these..cracking cars and a great buzz..

i think this is true of all stock turbo cars , until there turned up and fueled and mapped they tend to not be very exciting, if you drive my 3 with standard 0.8 bar @ 275bhp then jump into my mates 6 at 1.2bar @ 320 bhp the diff is amazing

I also experienced this last week, a lad around the corner has a 02 plate STI with quite a bit done to it and i was well dissapointed, i actually told him that my Sierra would eat it alive, so he took me up on the offer and i did, he claimed 320bhp and mine peaks 21psi on T34 and completely murdered it in a big way.

To be fair to the guy, 320bhp in an 02 STi is a de-cat downpipe, panel filter, fuel pump and a re-map. Which is about 800quids worth of stuff all in. What sort of power does your car make at 21psi on a T34? Plus, its only going through 2WD rather than 4WD in the Scoob.
I took a mate out in my Impreza and he said that his Stage 3 4x4 Saph feels way faster... On friday night, I had a brief run with an R33 GTR with around 420-430bhp down a local dual carriageway and beat that by about a car length from one side of my speedo to the other. The turbos on Imprezas as standard are pretty tame and definitely dont give you the kick in the back that the Cossies do, this can make them feel a bit flat.

Grant

What sort of power does it take to get a scoob running anywhere near the feel of a decent stg 3 cossie???

I would reckon that you'd have to be 380bhp+ to get a decent kick in the back more like the old skool power of a Cossie... like I said, change the turbo, to something that comes in later in the powerband and it'll be a bit more of a handfull. But I think that I make peak boost, 1.5-1.6bar at 3000rpm-ish which is pretty progressive rather than a big kick in the back.
Round the bends, he should really have beaten you, but that comes down to driver skill and commitment.. on the straights though, I would still expect your 300bhp to pull out a bit of a lead on his 320bhp with 4wd in a heavier car.
Cheers,
Grant

I had a UK turbo 2000 Classic shape. Remap decat full system and induction kit. Was making 297 and was a real tool. Stuck like nothing else through the bends on the standard 16" wheels. However drank fuel like nothin else and although it felt fast didnt give the same feeling of a big boosting RST.
