what are they like? got a work mate looking at one but ive no idea what there like in terms of power/handling/reliability etc.
One hes looking at is a j plate 2.3.

Fine, nothing special, not any big performance, just an ordinary FWD car with an ordinary 2.3 engine. Usual Audi decent build quality and looks.
On a J it wont cost anything either so nowt to worry about.
If it was an S2 its different, but a normal 2.3 is jus a car.

Wrong mate, they came in 2.3 20v as well as i just sold one, have one of these.....

Mine was a H plate and had done 190k miles but still drove like it cam out of the factory and everything worked on it as it should, still bags of power as mine was the 170bhp 20v model, the basic 2.3's were only around 130 horse !
Great cars if you want a cheap reliable runabout and the 5 cylinder engine sounds fucking sweet when you get higher up the revs

I bought mine for 200 quid, fitted new front discs and pads ( not cheap by the way at nearly 100 quid ! ) and sorted a couple of wee bits on it and put it through an mot and drove it for a month and sold it for 700 no probs !
Would deffo have another one but would have to be the 20v or even better an S2
