You are misreading what the popup is saying. It is just saying that they are stopping supporting the old version.

avg 8.0 is free,on the download page they try to sell you the "advanced version" but there is a link just under that box for the free version.

AVG8 is free too, its just cleverly worded with the free download box very small, exactly how Hotmail used to be back in the day.
Downloaded it last night, seems better than the old one as does spyware too.
