My only experience is of the mechanically identical Octavia VRS tdi!
Engines are great, bit noisy under hard acceleration and use a bit of oil but other than that really economical (if driven sensibly) and quite quick at all other times.
Not sure if the GT TDI 170 golf looks like the GTI or not TBH?

My friend had one of these briefly... was a brilliant car for him and his missus, just didn't do anything spectacularly so they got bored of it after a wee while. He never had any problems with it though and IIRC he saw some very impressive MPG figures when taking it easy down the dual carriageways.
I have driven an A3 TDi 170 and it really surprised me how quick it was.. I would guess that after a re-map they would seriously shift.
Cheers,
Grant

170 Bhp is the GT model, different wheels & susp and bumper but not ala GTI.
Nice cars and do go well. DPF can cause problems if car isnt driven properly i.e. hard. Reputable remaps now available for these lumps also but again can cause DPF issues.
My choice would be a 140Bhp GT Non DPF and a good remap, should be close to 180-185bhp without the above issues etc. Cheaper also, so what you save will pay for the remap.

Was easy 180Bhp plus - never has it roaded - Would pull 150+ mph on the clocks and had it showing 143mph on the sat nav! Not bad for a diesel!
Could easily embarass certain other motors.

My mate has got a 170bhp GT which he dinged into the back of a lorry so put a GTi front end on it. Looks well. Also has it remapped, reckons its a smidge over 200bhp.
1st 2nd and 3rd are a bit short, but once it the higher gears it does shift.

Dont confuse DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Issues with DSG (double clutch gearbox) problems. ![Big Grin](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
DPF's need to be regenerated over time or they soot up. The light will come on to tell the customer to drive sensibly. 2K or so high gears for a fairly long time (say 10-15 miles normally) If the customer doesnt the engone light comes on to say "oi, drive sensible or else" Then if thye dot the car restricts performance and then the customer brings in the car and says "runs shit" Caining the car with the light(s) on makes the problem worse
As an aside you get 1 DPF under warranty. The 2nd one you payt for and is over a grand.
DSG boxes have been pretty relaible. Make sure you get the oil changed (its a wet clutch system so it gets carbon in it) at 40K or you invalidate the warranty.
TDI Mk5 Golfs/Passats/Tourans all seem to suffer from Turbo's failing. BTW

I had a Leon Cupra TDI aka 1.9 150 Bhp running Revo software and a few other little tweaks.
Was easy 180Bhp plus - never has it roaded - Would pull 150+ mph on the clocks and had it showing 143mph on the sat nav! Not bad for a diesel!
