Default ford diesel 1.8

I am having troubles with a ford 1.8 diesel engine. it hunts like mad and cuts out occasionally. the fuel primer (with black round button on top) keeps going slack when the engine is running and the black button sinks in to the housing. when you turn engine off it builds back pressure and goes hard again??

any thoughts?

thanks

These fuel primers always give problems, i would change this first, They are not expensive and easy to fit .

a tad more expensive then! Not that it makes much different but this has been marinarised and is in a boat. everything bar sea water cooling system is the same as car item.
