Easy one, do you need a rod licence to fish in the canal?

You need one to fish any freshwater area's including private lakes that you pay for.

The only place you dont need on is for the sea I beleive.

Any angler aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England (except the River Tweed), Wales or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland must have an Environment Agency rod licence

Am i missing something. Why do you need one?? Where does the licence fee go or is it like another stealth tax kinda thing??

to stop people poaching the fish and to pay for the upkeep of the waterways, cleaning up litter, re-stocking the fish etc

Yep, another bollox rip off.

Makes me laugh that years ago when my dad had our ponds dug and we stocked them with fish we bought.. we still had to have a rod licence!
