If V6 cologne engine goes behind the cover lower right of front(water pump) cover as you look at it.
The stat goes so the spring bit goes towards the engine.

thanks tabetha. Jim gallby was right. I was looking in wrong place. It didn't have a thermo. What does that mean? I put the long spring into block

I was reffering to the 2.8 as the 2.9 never fitted to capris.
No stat usually means dodgy headgasket/s, oldest bodge in the book.

oh great. It was a right bitch to fit aswell. If it didn't have a thermo does that mean the fan wasn't cutting in? Its all done now so i hope it works.

Any ideas why the temp gauge doesn't work? Any known faults? I have cleaned the sensor but haven't tested since so hope that works

The 2.8i as standard doesn't have an electric fan It has a viscous fan powered by the alternator belt.

sorry mate. Didn't explain that too well. I know it viscous fan but i was under the impression that once its up to temp it then kicks in and runs a bit quicker. Is this wrong.

the thermostat has no relation to the fans whatsoever. what it does is allow the engine to maintain a MINIMUM temperature.

when the engine is cold it is shiu, this prevents the water flow from reaching the radiator, so it teels the water in the engine getting nice and toasty warm,, when it reaches temperature it opens up allowing the water to flow round the radiator. so it regulates the temperature to a set MINIMUM (cold engines are bad, mkay )

the reason people removed them is if they are having a colling problem it may bodge the problem and make it appear to be cured.

the fan on your car is purely machanical and relies on nothing otehr than itself. the bit that bolts onto the crank is a viscous unit. this contains a liquid that will lock when it gets hot. so the fan effectively turns itself off/on.

it's really very simple and once ytou get your head around it, very easy to work with.

so, what problems are you having with the car? let us try and work out what may be at fault...

Can you get the car over to Wycombe tomorrow? I'm at home all day having my car detailed but I'll give you a hand looking at it if you like.

The viscous is bolted to the water pump not the crank, it works as described, unless it has failed.
To test the viscous fan see if it has a bit of resistance to turning when engine is off, not a lot of resistance but must NOT spin freely, this is the normal fault, if thgey spin very freely they have leaked the fluid out, the other fault is they jam and spin at engine speed all the time, but you would be in no doubt about this as they consume so much power when doing so and will slow the car down a surprising amount at the same time as sounding like a WW2 aircraft!!.
SOME capris ALSO had a small electric fan fitted in front of the rad, as well as the viscous, as did xr4i's etc, depends on lots of things if they do or not, very few on capris though.

Thanks tabetha. I will give that a try if the rain can hold off for another 10 mins!!

Patsy Palmer. Sorry about the late reply. Very nice offer and I prob would have done mate but been rushed off my feet today. Thanks again though. Will have to try pop down soon to see the cossie

Jim Galbally - No problems as such with the car. When I got the car the water was like a brown paste so I have done 3 full flushes on it now and seems to have cleared. I thought after seeing the state of the water it would be best to change the thermostat to so i did but when i removed the housing there was nothing there. This then sparked the confusion into the thermostat removal :-(

ok cool. did you flush the heater matrix too? (pipes going into bulkhead) as these get properly crudded up

don't use a jetwash tho, justa normal hose or you'll burst it... lol (been there, done that)

the clips on the matrix are original and didn't want to disturb them but i fed a hose feed through the pipe at the bottom of the expansion while the mrs kept moving needle from hot to cold. I also fed water through top of rad, through expansion tank itself and the water housing at front of block. All this was with bottom rad hose off. Is that ok? Also fed some through bottom hose and the hose that goes to top of matrix from the head

hi guys. I flushed the system yet again and am confident to say all the brown crap is out. I took the car for about 5/6 mile drive and then let it run for about 10 mins once i got back. In that 10 mins i have to admit i didn't see the fan kick in.

I span the fan with the engine off and it didn't spin much so assuming the fluid is ok. Surely after that amount of driving it would have overheated.

you wont really notice the fan "kicking in" at idle. but you sure as fuck would notice it if youre doing 5000rpm... lol

anyway if its not overheating, dont worry about it.

pain in the arse to bleed properly them things tho, i remmeber having to do mine CONSTANTLY (xr4i)

gotta admit it seems to run a hell of a lot smoother since flushing the crap. Quite surprised to be honest as cant see how it related. Just remembered though i forgot to put anti-freeze in. Bugger! Looks like i'm flushing again tomorro.

At this point in time the gauge not working so will have to look at it. U think it sounds ok? I'm sure the expansion lid would have released after that much driving if it was hot. Whats the best way to make sure there no air in system??

After that test run i waited bout 5 mins then edged the cap off rad and expansion. It didn't over flow. Is that good or bad. The water in expansion tank was very warm but i wouldn't say boiling.

sounds like it's not bled itself properly yet, it should still get hot enough to boil over the header tank even with the fan running.

as for antifreeze, remember it's a 50:50 mix
