Only ever been once and only did 4 laps total and then only 2 of them were full laps due to car troubles, any way car was a focus rs running about 270 bhp and my time was 8 56 which i dont think was to bad for a novice at the ring.

here is the lap

i'd like to see video of some people's claimed fast laps

my personal best timed lap is 8:57

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31tIWotGvKE

with a fast car, i could be a lot quicker as i know the road very well. give me a subaru impreza, mitsubishi evo or bmw m3 and i would be in the 7's i reckon. but who cares?

I do agree mate, all these times don't make that Group A M3 I went in not look that impressive at all

I do appreciate though that track knowledge makes a fast lap smooth and safe and not once to I feel worried in that M3

Good vid though

I think that every second below say 8:30 is pretty hard to find. So if your mate in the M3 was managing 8mins on the dot he is going very quick.

I want to head out when there is low traffic as timing laps with traffic always stuffs it up. I have done 8:25 ish with 4 people in the car on a relatively quiet lap. I time every one in the hope that you get that lucky lap where you don't get held up

It was a 8.14 and he goes to the ring 11 times a year so he has very good track knowledge.

He said he never times his laps so I did just out of curiousity, its certainly no normal car though

First bridge you pass as you start and the gantry on the final straight, its quite obvious when your there.

As its going to be your first visit I'd worry more about finding the safe lines than timing laps, its far too easy to get it wrong when pushing hard and there is simply no room for error, most offs are very big accidents unless you make a minor mistake at low speed.

not true. i lost it at speed and managed to not crash, the car was too fast in the bend and understeering so bad i was drifting with all 4 wheels to the barrier,,,,,, then i tapped the brake and span but was lucky to scrub off the speed before getting it to rol backwards down hill then get the grass,,,, another car following would have been iffy though !

I timed a few people when i was out for laps with them but didn't tell them i was timing them.

Just after we passed the gantry i'd casually mention "Oh a 9.xx - not bad with that hold up at so and so..." - i think that it's better that way as then silly mistakes aren't made pushing hard in the attempt of what is ultimately - just a number.

lucky escape, certainly not the norm as a mistake will normally be more severely punished - especially if it's very busy and your mistake can cause somebody else some serious misery

i was being told how to drive the track but i was too busy giving way to people so took me over to the wrong line and kellenhard needs to be taken close to the armco to go round fast,,,, i was doing fine sort of but I lost me bottle when i was comming close to the barrier as the tyres had LESS grip than the lap before so like a IDIOT i tapped the brake, knew it was wrong when i done it hence i tapped it and then i had to control ( if you call it that ) to get the cars wheels to slow it down before it turned totally and then off the track

i was lucky sort of as i was putting alot of faith into a passenger who knew the track and so was ABOVE what i was good enough to drive

though all other laps i was using understeer to slow the car when i was comming in too fast hence i got used to the drift and knew it was gonna go TOO wide

i find using the brakes before the corner is better - and doesn't fuck your tyres up as much

Your first lap will be in the 10s probably.

Mine was 10:16 in a car Id never driven before, with NO prior knowledge of the ring at all (id never watched a full lap video and had never been passenger)

Getting into the 10s in a half decent car is easy, its breaking out of them and into the 9s that requires a few laps practice, then obviously the next big jump into the 8s requires a decent car and a well rehearsed driver.
Getting into the 7s, is a REAL achievement IMHO no matter what car you are driving and I doubt I will ever be in something quick enough and drive well enough there to manage it quite frankly!

Mikes got it sorted tbh, the car is very well setup, power everywhere which helped a lot and he knows the track in great detail, I was actually gutted I didn't have a car there as I'd be happy to get tuition off him for a few laps.

Hopefully next year I'll have mine done and take it over but I'll be even more aware of the dangers when pushing hard in something rwd

I might even be brave enough to run it above 1.5 bar in the mid-range next time .

Very kind of you to say so, as I wasn't sure if you were scared or bored with the two laps, as you didn't say anything . However, to be fair, I think anyone who knows where the track is going could drive my car fast, as it is very well set up and makes someone half-decent, look competent .

Obviously my ultimate aim is to get below 8 mins on 1.5 bar, and then once I have achieved that, see how much can be shaved off with an extra bit of oooomph . I didn't time myself once over the weekend, but the lap I did against the green CSL and his mate in the normal coloured one (where they started some way ahead ) would have been interesting, as it was early on Monday morning and relatively clear (by comparison).

In 7 trips I've never had a lap properly timed, as back in the good ole days it wasn't about timing, more the fun/challenge of learning the best track in the world.

Someone casually (and secretly) timed a lap my Dad did this trip at 9.20, I was dead even with him all the way round untill I backed off to coast round the second apex of the last corner and came under the gantry at 9.33 (so I was then told!). That wasn't one of the fastest laps of the trip, I would think we were getting around 9mins ish on some laps. That was on low boost though as I try to be smooth and carry speed through where possible rather than hoon it everywhere then hard on the brakes.

In early trips I would definately say I was consideribly quicker but having someone close to you involved in an off causing problems/serious expense getting the car home has seriously slowed me down, made me think and made me treat the Ring with a great deal more respect than a UK track day.

Agree with Mikes above comments though, when he lets me lose in Peggy I reckon I'll crack into the 7s.

from what i worked out you need to average 70 mph to do a 10 dead. 79mph to do a 9 dead and 88ish to do an 8 dead. i clocked it at 11.8 miles bridge to gantry. i found average speed the easiest way to time a lap as i could do it on the trip computer in the car, just hit reset as you go under the bridge and then a quick glance down as you go under the gantry.

That is what its about in my eyes Nath

I dont time myself however I do have a 9.03 on film 4 up. During that lap I do back off the gas in a few places and in general speeds are down on what they are with 2 bodies less.
Im not in 8:20 teritory just yet but not far off it

Time every lap and I want to move towards filming every lap too. If you only time " the odd lap " then the pressure is on to deliver the goods. If you time every lap then if the goods arrive, u have a log of it.

So that chap was doing 8:14 in his m3 - thats a really nice fast motor It happens to look the bomb too .

Mike - I even texted you to remind you to time every lap. Your never going to 'know' if u dip into the 7's unless u time them. That seems pretty obvious to me
