Default lawn experts

im in need of some help,

Ive been living in my house for about the last 2 year's, due to money and other thing ive not bothered with the garden, but seeing as now the weather has kinda sorted its selfout, ive decided its time to take action n sort it,

After a mammoth session yesterday of strimming and cutting down of the odd tree i have come to the conclusion the my lawn is fooked i actually have more weeds than grass and it looks like it was laid by stevie wonder

So instead of trying to fix it ive decided to lay a new 1,
now this is where i need the help i havent got a clue what im doing

Do i need to get rid of the old turf completely or can i use a rotivator n just break down the old lawn?

and wheres the best place to buy the turf (i live in coventry )

any more tips welcome cheers jay

If laying a new lawn at this time of year you must keep it watered or the edges will curl up. Best time of year to lay is September

no need for a sprinkler really, just hose it twice a day or something, as long as its kept damp.

You can use a rotorvator to get the old turf up. Make sure you level it off befor putting new turf down. Keep it watered really well as it will shrink and you will be left with gaps every where. If you do have to walk on the grass at any point put a plankl down to walk on it then remove it or you will be left with dead yellow grass.

Dig up all the old lawn, if the soil underneath is shit then its best to put some top soil down
Then just lay the new lawn down and keep it from drying out.

Try your local garden centers, when i worked at one we used to sell rolls (1m2) for about Ł3.75 or 20 rolls for Ł70. That was for Rolawn Gold medallion http://www.rolawn.co.uk/turf-medallion.html

Why dont you just dig it up,level it and then put grass seed down, far easier! I have just done exactly this to my back garden and the grass is just starting to grow.Once levelled, all you need to do is rake in grass seed and then water regularly in this weather, annd it will shoot up.If you have any patches, you can reseed.

we dug up the old soil in teh garden and pulle dup ever weed we could

then we got a few bags of soil from homebase along with a few bags of compost and mixed and spread them about the surface
and then sprinkled it all with water
then sprinkled loads of grass seeds all over the place and left it to grow

i now need to cut the grass once a week to keep it in check

but it was around Ł50 this way as opposed to closer to Ł300 for turf

actually i never thought of seeds, i suppose by the time you have layed the turf and waited for it to root in place you could have some growing already from seeds, and be cheaper as said

seed sounds a good option, ive just measured up, will get a couple of quotes of the tinter-net n if its to expensive seed may b my only option, i suppose lawn laying is like painting it all in the preparation,

Dunno if it works out any cheaper, and not a quick fit, but a lazy way! I used Evergreen weed and feed to kill off the weeds and then laid seed
